Default Door lock safety feature?

Ok so this morning I dropped my friend off at the Yamaha dealer and when he went to get into the car the door wouldn't open. I pressed the unlock button and I watched the lock turn to the unlock position and he still couldn't open the door - nor could I open it from the inside.

I turned the car off, locked it, then unlocked it and then he could open it.

Once we started talking about it, I think it may be because I was in gear and/or I didn't have the parking brake on.

Is this a safety feature so that maybe someone that walks up to your car they can't open it?

Thanks!

No. If your friend happens to be pulling on the door handle at the same time your trying to unlock his side, it will not unlock. This use to happen to me alot, because the passengers automatically assume that their door unlocks when the driver's side does. All you have to do is lock the door again, then unlock it. Tell them not to pull on the handle while you're doing it.

Haha it's not like I've had my license for a week here. I locked it and unlocked it many times while he was trying to open it. It didn't open until I turned my car off and locked it, then unlocked it.

Not according to your original post, you didn't....
Either way, good luck finding the cause. Other than what I stated earlier, I really don't have another answer...
