Default Gear Shifting Issue

On normal day to day driving I can shift from 5th to 6th with no problem. But sometimes if I shift into 6th from 5th, it will grind unless I push in the clutch and then rev the gas and then shift. Why is this? It will also grind if I try and shift to fast from 5th to 6th when racing. I have to wait a second when shifting or it will grind. Is this normal?

it's called rev matching, your letting off the gas too soon. You need to learn how to lightly keep the gas accelerated while you shift. If you let the RPM's drop all the way off it will have problems going into gears. Lack of experience, you'll work it out eventually.

Um the guy above doesnt know what he's talking about sorry. You dont have to rev match your damn car. You should be able to let off the gas and shift to the next gear at any rpm without a grind no matter how low the rpms drop. You most likey have some bad syncro's inside your trans and or a severly worn clutch. I would take the car to a shop and have them assess the problem. Sorry for the bad news but this will not be a cheap or easy fix at all. Sometimes switching the trans oil to a really nice syncromesh such as Royal purple could smooth out the problem. I would try that first and if it doesnt improve then you eventually need a rebuild of the tranny or new one all together. Also remember there is a slight and i mean very slight chance your clutch is bad also but i cant tell you over the internet without driving the car. Good luck.

hondakiller = WRONG

chromesilver = RIGHT

sounds just like bad synchros, and it is exactly the problem i am having. and it mostly only happens when downshifting from 6th to 5th, and like you said, its not every time. assuming you are still within the warrantable range, this should be covered under your power/drive train warranty

ive got to go and get mine fixed up as well, as the grinding really irritates me when it happens. i can have the clutch all the way on the floor and still get it.

If you're still under powertrain warranty and can demonstrate this for a dealer, you may be able to get a new tranny out of it. Good luck.
