omfg....i dont know but I think i found my culprit. Small stones on the driveway. I just realized that I hear the sound the most when Im on my driveway and in my neighborhood which has alot of little pebbles on the ground. I now realize that its been small pebbles that have been hitting the underside of my car and made the metallic 'hailing' noise that ive been hearing.

I think I have the same problem. I usually don't hear it because my stereo is on, but when it is off or low for some reason I have two noises occasionally. The rear view mirror rattle sometimes and some type of noise in hatch area. Have they fixed the rear view mirror issue? I have a subwoofer under the strut, so I guess I would have to take it out for them look at it. Do you think they would blame it on subwoofer? I'm not a big fan of taking my car to dealer either. I don't like anyone besides myself driving or taking care of it (I know ****).

I have taken the whole strut bar apat (well all the plastic that covers it) and drove around and still get the rattle. So i dont think putting padding there will work for me...

I took mine to the dealer last Friday. They pulled off the hatch and saw 2 pieces of metal inside the hatch that they can not get out. They called Nissan Cons. and they said they have to replace the hatch and the spoiler. They said metal fell in hatch while they were drilling holes for the spoiler. Dealer gave me a loaner so I'm Z-less until probably next week.

Lightbulb Metallic like rattle in rear- FOUND!

Ok I've heard about so many rattles and I've got 5k on my Z and I have only had one in my driver door, which is very minor so I decided not to go digging around..

But I recently started to have a metallic like rattle which I thought was somewhere near the spare tire or it was even the Z crosstower support rattling.. After taking all of the plastic apart and removing the aluminum Z cover and the spare, jake, etc... I STILL HAD the noise! So I decided to pop the hatch open where it was just unlatched and drive to see what I would hear.. It was GONE! I found I needed to do 2 things to get rid of the rattle..

1) at the back of the car to the lef and right of where the latch goes in there is the black plastic covering.. That was where my rattle was coming from.. If you closed fisted bang on the left side (for my car anyhow) there was something I couldn't see under there which was making a rattling noise. So I stuffed a small rag between and under the black plastic and the rubber gasket that is the seal for when the hatch closes.. I left just a tiny piece of the rag visible with most of the rag underneath stopping the noise..
2) There are two small rubber nubbies I will call them at the back of the hatch near the edge, one on the left and right that rest on this black plastic piece I jammed the rag under... I took some blk electrical tape and wrapped it around them both a number of times to add a little length to the rubber nubby.. Hence making it a tighter close when you shut the hatch. In fact, I have to now push with one hand on the glass, as to not scratch the paint if I did it on the edge of the painted surface, when I close the hatch because it is harder to close. BUT the noise is TOTALLY GONE!!

I don't know if this is what many others are hearing.. But I was so frustrated and wanted you all to know what fixed my irritatiing noise.

The dealer cut my old hatch and found 2 sets of bolts and washers. They think that it was intentionally put by the person who installed the spoiler. They said the new hatch will go in on Monday. That means another weekend without the Z.

I'm only guessing, but I don't think the hatch will come painted like your spoiler so I think you will have to also wait for them to paint the hatch.

Well, I opened the hatch and drove a short distance and the "ticking" sound was not present so I theorized in had to be in the hatch. I removed the hatch cover, determined that two of the orange snap connectors were broken (had to been put back on that way by the technician when they first attempted to fix the rattle). I noticed that the dealer put little foam pieces all on the underside of the plastic cover. At least he was truthful about that. That's what he said he did. I inspected the underside of the hatch. There are a few wires that are attached with clips to the hatch. I duct taped them down since they did rattle a little. All the connectors on the wiper motor were torqued down as far as I could tell. I didn't have any replacement connectors but went ahead and put the cover back on. Bottomline, "ticking" is still there. It was over 100 degrees this weekend and I had sweated enough. So I will attempt to look further later. Next attempt (should have thought of this before) is drive the car with the hatch over off. I might be able to hear better or at the least if the sound is gone, then something in the cover is the problem.
