Default 2004 Z: Oil Drained = 3.5 quarts....What's going on?

Hello all,

I just changed the oil on my 2004 base model, and I finally took the initiative to actually measure how much oil I drained out of the engine. I measured a measly 3.5 quarts. I added the usual 5 quarts. Oil was drained while the car was on 4 jack stands set on the same hight.

Oil consumption? I despise the dipstick in the Z, so I never know how much oil is really in the car whenever I check. Maybe if I drained the oil at an angle, as in, jack the car on the opposite side of the drain plug (the driver's side) such that the oil drains easier, that would drain more oil?

I just did an oil change on my 318is on the same 4 level jack stands and got about 4.5 quarts out of her.

Please tell me this is not an oil consumption problem.

I really hope this is not an oil consumption problem.
you need to learn to check the dip stick more. It's easy. If you need help, PM me.

You might be having oil consumptions. Did you warm up the car a bit before changing the oil? Sometimes the oil will run out better if it's a bit warm. Did you count in the oil inside the oil filter and from the oil filter area?

One way to check to make sure you are draining the oil correctly is put in some cheaper oil at 5 quarts and then change the oil the next day (without driving) the same way you normally change the oil and see if it all comes out at 5 quarts. Might be a flaw the way you are changing it. Good luck. Pm me if you need any help.

I did warm the car up as I always do before doing the change. I also factored in the amount that came out of the filter. I did spill some, so maybe 3.75 quarts came out in actuality.

The dipstick on my bmw is soo much easier to read. What's the trick to getting an accurate read on the Z's?

Is there any definitive way to knowing if you truly have oil consumption?

I have made an art out of my oil changes and I can tell you draining 3.5 qts out after 5k miles is normal.

However if your numbers are worse (ie 3k mi) you may want to check for blow by, or a leaking gasket.

As for reading the dip stick, I have attached a Nissan issued chart for "acceptable" oil consumption.
