Transmission Problem
Hi, I have an 04 with a little over 40k miles on it. I got my transmission replaced under warranty last year when I had around 30k on my car. Now, couple of months ago I started to notice that my second grinds every time I shift at hight RPMs. I took it to Nissan and they refuse to do anything because when they drive it normally everything is okay. I tried telling them it only grinds if they try to quickly shift any time above 6k RPMs. After dealing with them for about a month nothing is happening. So, I know something is wrong and eventually get will get a lot worse, but my warranty runs out in November of this year. Can you guys give some advice about what to do? Another thing I had mind and I know it is wrong is to purposely ruin the transmission to a point that they will have to fix it. I'm not sure what I should do and don't want the warranty to run out and end up paying few thousand out of my pocket to fix the problem. Any help would be great. Thanks.

That last portion of your statement needs to be removed pronto- "Big Brother" could be watching and seriously screw you over!!! Fraud won't get your car fixed.
take it to another dealer and/or have the service manager or dealership owner ride WITH YOU in the car. Call nissan and complain if things don't prgoress from there... I don't know a dealership that will not want to get paid to replace warranty work- especially something as pricey as a trans replacement. If you car is modified, don't drive up there and act like it, either- showing that you are a responsible driver and that this is mechanical failure and not driver abuse is a plus, too.
take it to the dealer and drive with a tech,,let him know that you drive the car the way its designed to be driven (enthusiasticly).yeah you shift at a higher rpm and maybe a bit faster then usual but who doesnt from time to time,,thats what the "Z" is all about..if that doesny get you anywere PM me if you dont mind the drive i'll get it handled.also remember that the powertrain warranty on your Z is 60 months or 60.000 miles.
Well, the thing is that when I drive normally it shifts fine. It only grinds when shifting at high RPMs and when I shift really quickly.

the transmission would less likely grind at higher RPMS... sounds like driver error to me. If you can't mimic the grind at lower RPMS then it is your own timing that is off. Grinds dont come and go, once they start to grind they stay grinding untill... end of story.

If it was once or twice it could be my fault, but it is every single time and only second gear. I have been driving manuals for quite a while, and have taken the car to a drag strip few times while back with the older transmission. Never had any problems shifting into second gear with it. Also, couple of other people drove the car and same problem with second gear, so I can assure it is not driver error.

Sorry, but I know i've run into the number before but I couldn't find it in a search. Does anyone know who to contact if the dealer will not adress your tranny problem? thanks
Mine does the exact same thing but in 3rd gear. Once your tranny gets too worn out, it will make this sound (It's not driver error). Try waiting for the RPM's to fall a little more than you would (for Aggressive Driving) before you shift to 2nd. This works for me...
Before you actually think it's the tranny... you might be wrong and it is possible your shifting to fast.... The gears on the Z tranny are aggressive and the syncros don't open up fast enough in most cases, especially if your fluid is cold and hasn't been given a chance to warm up, even if the fluid is warm you can still make it happen every time... I even bet you can make it happen in 5th gear... If your going to shift as fast as you can invest in a better tranny fluid (motul) or something.... a better fluid will help the syncros out... but yes you can make all Z tranny's grind by shifting to fast in them... and if you don't want to get a better fluid do a slower more steady shift, you'll prolong the life of your tranny and have less wheel spin.... plus shifftin to fast will actually lock you out of gear sometimes(causing you to miss gear) because the syncros don't open fast enough... hope this helps... even with the clutch all the way engaged you can still have these results everytime
