Default 3rd gear grind

Guys!

As I told you before I am experiencing the 3rd gear grind issue. Even
having extended warranty - got scre..ed by Nissan USA - since my car
is out of US I am not covered anymore so free tranny replacement is
not an option!!

My question is : Is there any way to fix the faulty synchro on 3rd
gear or I need to replace the whole tranny ?? Is driving with this
issue dangerous - would it kill the transmission sooner or later or is
just that annoying noise ??

It's just annoying.

You can get the synchros replaced.

Thank for the fast reply! What do you think : replacing synchros vs replacing tranny ?? What would be the estimate cost and downtime for both ??

I know you can get a new 009 tranny for under 2K at the dealer. How much would the synchros be? Are we talking about NISSAN synchros or are there any manufacturers (not Nissan) who make them? I assume u need to remove the tranny to replace the synchros - so guessing the labour would be even more expensive than replacing the tranny itself. Is that correct ?

Sorry for all those (maybe silly for you guys) questions. Unfortunately I am not a mechanic but cars enthusiast.

Nissan finds it more financially beneficial for them to replace the whole tranny when this occurs so ...

SURE !! But at the end of the line I am getting scre..ed twice (first for paying extended warranty that they deny to replace nissans faulty part, 2nd for paying from my own pocket for the new tranny if the issue can be fixed by replacing synchros) ..

so honestly I don't care what Nissan thinks, but whats better for my budget and still not bad for the car

You should find another dealer or call Nissan directly.

It's something they will replace under warranty, as it's a known issue.

Usually they don't replace synchronizers. They replace the entire unit. You can get it rebuilt but then you gotta pay for the rebuild kit and then someone to actually perform the work and the removal and installation. Its about 3500 to get it replaced at a dealer anyways.

What im trying to say is ...
Its cheaper for Nissan to replace the whole thing so its probably cheaper for you. And if fixing a grinding gear is worth over 3K to you go for it.

You can find used tranny's (look for the CD009 revision) for under $750. I got mine for $250. It's really the only solution to fixing the the tranny issue. Just be patient and baby 3rd gear until you can get your hands on one.

Thanks for all the replays guys.. finding another dealer is not an option - I am overseas and called Nissan directly already. They refused to replace my tranny because my car is out of US. Looks like I will need to get a new one and pay for it .. once again : Thanks for all the advices
