Knock after Royal Purple Oil Change w/video website link
Hey i don't know if this is the right place to post this so tell me if its not. This is my first post for the site. I have owned my 05 z for about 6 months now. I recently changed my oil and rear diff fluids to Royal Purple 10w30 in engine and 75w90. I noticed that i now have a slight tick/knock in the engine. What is this. Did i do something wrong. Is it too late to switch back. Please give answers fast because this is my daily driver. Im new to 350zs. I have always worked with Subarus. Thanks

mine is doing the exact same thing. nissan tech told me its the oil filter i was using. didnt have the check valve to prevent drainback on the amsoil filter i was using. switched to K&N with the check valve and does the same thing still. driving me nuts. i checked last night, sound is coming from the exact same location, same frequency and timing as the video. i used a long flat head screwdriver to figure out the source of the knocking. the valve cover area sounds fine, if you place the screwdriver on the ID plate just above the exhaust manifold you can hear the knock.
according to the maintenance manual this would indicate either piston slap or rod knock. Nissan tech told me it was the lifters becoming unprimed because i wasnt using a nissan oil filter with the check valve. also told me to put a nissan filter in, and after about 2 oil changes it should go away. when i asked him if it would do any damage he said it shouldnt and is a very common problem with the VQs when people take them to the quicky oil change places. ive now gone over 2000miles on my car since i first heard the noise. car still runs fine, no smoking, slightly rough idle with the AC off, which is normal for the Z. its just a sound right now and hasnt gotten any worse.

Get rid of the crap RP out of your engine and put some Amsoil or Penzoil Plat that actually protect your engine. RP is one of the worse synthetics you can get on UOAs.
