Default A rattle in the right rear!

ok this is for my brother who lives on so cal.He has a 07 z base model withe 18k miles on it. About 7 weeks ago he noticed a rattle coming from the right rear of the car. He described the noise to me as,"It sounds like a clunk as if you were sitting in the car while some one was clunking the gas filler neck when refueling. But it only dose it when you hit a bump in the road". So he took it to the dealer and they told him it was the gas strut for the hatch so they put a new one on and he picked up the car. He called me and said it still rattled. he told me that the sound appeared to come from the wheel well area more so. I went down there for thanks giving and we jacked up the car and just checked all the bolts to make sure there was nothing lose every thing looked good on a visual inspection and every thing was tight. A week later he said it got unbearably loud so he took it back to the dealer and they said nothing was wrong. So he brings the car home and pulled out all the rear interior and had his girl friend drive him around while he sat in the back to listen for the rattle. He calls me up and said the noise was coming from under the car in the right rear where the shock mount is so I suggested he take it to another dealer for a second opinion. So he does so and takes a tech for a ride to show him the noise. The tech said,"That does not sound good leave the car with us for a day so we can look at it".He did and he picked up the car yesterday and they told him it needed a gas strut for the hatch but this time they changed the left side and it still rattles so if any one has encountered this let me know. He is so disjointed in the car he is ready to sell it!

The car is bone stock no mods at all!

My '07 with almost identical amount of miles has a similair sound, but only really when I turn my car off... I think mine is the heatshield or a bad C.C., but I am going to try to get it to the dealership soon, I will keep you posted.... Do the same for me?

I had the same problem going over bumps but my is a 08, it gets louder depending on the size of the bump. I took it to the nissan dealership and the tech fixed the problem. Hope this helps, Here is the Tech notes...

500 performed test drive with customer. Verified complaint. Found a noise coming from the right rear when going over bumps. Sounded like the exh tube hitting metal. Raised Vehichle and performed inspection. Found the exh tube hitting on the crossmember that runs horizontally under the vehicle. Adjusted exh tube and crossmember acordingly. Re-checked for noise. All check ok

Devlin, I know it sounds dumb, but is the spare/space saver wheel properly secured? I've been in two friends Zeds with knocking noises in back, both proved to be the hat on the spare wheel wasn't properly in secured, or the little hat that secures it was rattling around not even on top centre of the wheel. If that makes sense.

Sounds weird that they replaced the hatch struts. If he is close to us have him bring it over.

Lemon Law is for new cars that have less than 18k miles or 18 months of age.

maybe wheel bearing @ that mileage. will progressively get worse.
also pull the wheel of and inspect the hub and axle for any inconsistent
wear/markings.
