Refilling A/C system question

I had my motor out of the car this past winter to put some new hardware on a turbo that had worked it's way loose from the manifold.
I drained the pressure out of the A/C system and disconnected the lines to the condenser.
When I re-installed the motor, I made sure everything was hooked up correctly and the A/C fittings were all sealed.
Last time I had the motor out (swap to built motor) I had Nissan refill my A/C to the tune of $125. I decided that I didn't want to spend that much cash this time and I would do it myself with one of those kits from Autozone. Tonight I attempted to fill my A/C system to no avail. I followed the directions on the canister, but my A/C compressor wouldn't kick on at all so it wouldn't fill.
My A/C worked perfectly last fall before I took everything apart and the harness to the compressor IS hooked up.
Anybody else have issues refilling A/C on their car?
EDIT: Did a little research and found out that the compressor may not kick on if the pressure in the system is too low. This is probably my issue. Anyone know how to manually activate the compressor without having to run a jumper wire to the battery from the harness?
