Has anyone had their throw out bearing replaced? I have a rattling mechanical noise with clutch released in neutral and goes away when clutch depressed. transmission shifts smooth in and out of all gears. Dealer wants to replace release bearing, but I don't want them to damage anything else in the transmission after hearing about all the shifting problems. I'm also just starting to notice tire feathering. Dealer said nissan will not replace tires,but they know about the bullatin and will swap front tires off rims and align front end. will this fix it? This car only has 3200 miles on it. Built 12/02

 

Most dealers are replacing the tires. Abnormal wear, even on a sports car with this few miles is not acceptable and dangerous.

Remember when the NSX first came out. Those things were going through rear tires in 4000 miles. Before an owner knew to check them, they were bald and the owner was spinning into a semi. This actually happened at least a few times and Acura faced a class-action lawsuit due to it.

 

When I described the noise to my tech at Nissan...he said that he thought it was probably a heat shield rattling against the exhaust. When I press in my clutch (while in neutral) he said that it just relieves the spinning parts and that is why the noise probably stops.

Is he blowing smoke up my @$$? It kinda seems like it. Sigh...my car has a SLIGHTLY difficult time shifting into third gear as well.

Sounds like I need to make ANOTHER trip into the dealership for service!? >:-(

 

Yes, I would say he is blowing smoke. My transmission was doing the same "Rattling". I changed to Redline Oil in the gear box. Guess what! No more noise. Go figure! I changed the fluid at 5000 miles. I now have 8500 everything is fine.

The spinning mechanical noise is just that, when your foot is off the clutch, the tranny gears are spinning. Perfectly normal.

The noise from the throwout bearing is strange,, I notice it too. But it seems to be just the way that tranny is, since its on almost everyone's Z.

So I dont think by getting a new tranny or throw out bearing your going to change anything, just enjoy the car.

BTW, I also switched to Redline in the tranny and the rattling sound did NOT go away. The rattling sound I'm referring to is the sound of spinning gears.

So, what weight do I need when\if I switch to redline, is it always a good thing to do? Does it void warranty? Am I hi-jacking this thread!?

 

Yea, switching to any fluids that don't fall under manufacturers specs can void your warranty. If you really want to run Redline, run Redline. Just remember to switch fluid if you have to take it in for something.
