most A/C systems develop a smell. you can try Frigi-Fresh spray, or disassemble the whole mess, clean it and put it back together
it will be OK until mold starts growing again...
Lysol spray can be sprayed at the intake vents under the hood when the AC is running, but pretty temporary...

frigi fresh only worked for a couple days and the smell was back. Our subaru went 55k before getting some of that smell. None of my families American cars from the 70's and 80's had this problem. Has anyone discovered a permenant fix? Since old cars I'm familier with didn't have this problem - this must be a bad design. I'm pretty unhappy about having a stinking ventilation system.

My wife has a 240sx with the same problem. Car smells like a port-a-potty on a hot day in Jaurez. She's had this problem since the car was new. I've noticed it to a lesser degree in the Z. Could it be the materials that Nissan is using?

I am thinking it might be that Micron filtration filter that we have, holding moisture and turning into mold. I wish it was easy to remove I would just get rid of it, but I was told it's a big job you have to pull apart half the dashboard to get to it. Wait till you have to replace that thing the part is over $50 and I believe they told me couple hours labor. I think it's pretty ridiculous of a feature anyway, how purified can you make the air if you're opening the window or door and getting all-new air anyway.

I complained to the service center asking them to change the AIR FILTER for the cabin, thay say there isnt one, kinda hard to believe but i guess ill just have to deal with it, i found some FABREEZE for the car i sparyed it into the air vent out side under the hood with the AC on full, and ran it for a couple of hours it worked pretty good havent had the smell as bad for about 3 months now!!! Try it!!!

They lied to you. It's just a real pain to get too.

I don't believe the 350Z has a micron filter. There is no reference to a micron filter in any 350Z promotional material and I have a factory service manual and could not find any reference to it.
I know most of the other Nissan vehicles have one. My Maxima did and my Xterra does, but I don't think it is an option for the Zs.
Who told you there was one? Are you sure your source is correct?

The Z does not have a micron filter like other Nissans do. 2 things you can do to help are : 1. make an external filter that fits over the external air duct, I posted this on another forum, I cannot remember which one, I'm not on my mac, I'll find it later, easy to do , costs maybe $5. / 2. When close to home, turn off the A/C and turn the fan on high to run dry outside air through the HVAC.

Hey Erich,
to save me the time of looking for it, can you please direct me as to where the ouside air vent is? I'd like to try the Fabreeze trick of yours!
