Question Grinding Noise At Start Up

I've research this subject a little bit and it has been discussed but no follow up on it. I wanted to open it up again to get some feedback.

I've noticed this when I'm starting up my Z. As soon as the car starts up, for about a second or two there is an apparent GRINDING noise from the tranny. I didn't think much about this before but it's just now that it's being consistent each time I start the car. Now this happens only when you first start it in the morning after its been sitting for about eight hours or so. The link below was a topic in regrds to this but like I said no follow up. Does anyone else experience this problem, if so what action did you take? I wanted to get all the information I can get before bringing it to the dealership. Thanks.

This is the only thing bugging me over the year I have had my Z.

Whats so odd about it is that it happens randomly. Sometimes it happens and most of the time it doesnt. But the only thing for sure is that it happens in the morning after the car has been sitting for awhile.

So I'm guessing you haven't brought it to the dealers attention? This is probably going to be more evident during the winter. I'm going to wait until that time to bring it to the dealership. I would still be interested to know if this is a natural occurance to our Z's.

I cant really replicate it to make a good case to the dealership. If it gets worse though, I will definitely bring it to the dealer.

I have the same noise, but it only started happening when I installed the AEM CAI. I don't think it's specific to the AEM.

It's not even 1 or 2 secs. but the moment you start it in the mornings and in the garage. I can't notice it when I have parked it outside over night. It must be the enclosure that amplifies the noise.

I have pointed it out to the dealer and they don't seem to think it's an issue. (in other words, "can't duplicate the problem") And does anyone elses Z rev to almost 1500-200 immediately when you start it in the morning? This usually coinsides with the noise problem on mine, and I had an '02 Maxima that did the same thing.

I have a silver stone performance with 5K miles , I hear the grinding noise....in the mornings...or when the car has sat for a while. I am going to take my Z into the dealer for many things....symptoms I have read . Its SAD. I HATE to go to the dealership........especially when the car all of a sudden heals its self of any symptoms.

That never seem to fail. The thing about it is, the dealership knows that there are a lot of problems out there with our Z's. But of course it would be too much for them to actually research the problem for you and offer a solution.

Grinding noise from tranny. dunno. But there is a grinding noise that you will hear consistently upon starting your car and driving for 5 seconds. It will sound like a grind but it is really the ABS self checking that is activating itself and testing your breaks. This happens everytime you put the key in the egnintion an start your car. So try starting your car drive it wait for the noise and then turn your car off key out and start your car on again.....if the sound repeats there you go. Problem solved. If not. DAM I HATE RENTALS.

I have the same problem, and also thought it was the tranny. I took it into my local dealer and let it stay overnight so it could be duplicated upon start-up in the morning by a mech I used to work with. Turns out, the sound comes from the front of the engine. They were able to duplicate it that night luckily, and in the morning, he started it up and I listened with the hood open. He thinks it is the CVTCS solenoid on one of the intake cams grinding during engagement, but can't identify which one because the noise disappears after a second. But, sure enough, it is coming from the engine not the tranny. I've redone the excercise twice since then with my wife starting and me listening, and still can't tell for certain which bank it is, but sounds like the passenger side. I am trying to get the service manager to approve replacing both units rather than waiting until the sound remains on long enough to positively identify which side it is on.The engine revving on start-up is normal by the way.

Is it for only 6 Spds?

This morning i've also heard it as well.. The car started normally, and then all of a sudden some weird grind? I've never had this happen before during my 4 months of ownership...

I think it might be the starter not fully disengageing after it is started up.

I'm going to have them pull the starter and test/examine it.
