Possible engine start-up issue?
Hi All,
I just bought a used 2008 350Z base MT Black last week. Car had 4200 miles on it and everything looks new. I have put about 300 miles on her by now.
Anyway, when I start the engine from a cold start sometimes (about 50% of the time) the engine starts up at 2000 RPM and sits there for about 1 min. Normal start-up should be 2000 RPM and then it should idle out quickly around 500 right? Mine sits at 2000 RPM and I'm not sitting in the gass pedal. After about a min of the car idleing around 2000 RPM it again sinks down to 1000-500 RPM range. This just concerns me as it could harm the engine.
Any input is welcomed. Just got the car so I'm not an expert (yet).
Thanks for the help, Mason

How cold is it there? Temperature makes a difference.
When the temperature is above 70*F, my '08 jumps to about 1800 as soon as it fires, but it'll be down to about 1500 in several seconds, and down to 1200 after about 45 seconds.
When it's freezing, it goes to 2000 for about 15 seconds, then starts slowing down.
I always wait at least a full minute before driving it after a cold start.
The dealer told me this is normal, and the reason is to get the catalytic converters up to temperature as soon as possible to reduce emissions.

our cars take a bit to get to normal driving/operating conditions. a bit, as in, a bit longer than the average car. oil pressure, oil temp, water temp, engine idle speed, so on and so forth, etc., all take a bit longer to get to "normal" operating conditions.
you're good.
you're good.
