Cylinder #1 Misfire
Hey guys I've got an '03 touring that I've had for about a month and a half. The other day it started to sputter just a little when you first turned it on and the CEL light came on. The code says that its a cylinder 1 misfire. It seems to run great through all of the gears its only when you first start it. Any ideas where to start? I took the spark plug out and the gap was .65 instead of .43 and the plug also has a pretty heavy gasoline smell to it. I fixed the gap and put it back in. That maybe helped a little but it still does it some. I haven't had time to do anything else with it. Any help would be great! Thanks!

Mileage is 96k and the records show regular oil changes and tune ups etc. I haven't done anything to it accept change the oil. The plugs are NGK's I don't know when the last time they've been changed.

Yeah I thought it could be that. I'm going to try a new set of plugs this weekend first and see if that helps out any. If not then I'm gonna try a new coil. My CEL went off but it's still having the same problem...go figure.

I just did that this evening. I'm waiting for the CEL light to kick back on and see if the code moved to the other cylinder. Hopefully thats all that is wrong.

Well I swapped the coil packs and the CEL light kicked back on. Still says cylinder 1 misfire. I'm thinking about buying a new fuel injector and giving that a try. Any more advice or anything else to try?

could be a leaking exhaust valve or burned valve causing the cylinder to lose compression..if not that, ur A/f mixture is off in that cylinder.. clogged injector or defective injector..

Bumping old thread that is exactly what I'm going threw with cylinder 2 . The sputtering at idle , and cel on and off always reading cylinder 2 missfire . I switched coils , replaced the plug and also did a compression test . What's the next move one of you guys think I should do ? Replace injector ? Thanks !
I'd like to add that the misses I'm experiencing at idle sound like someone is punching the motor .

I will probably do that and have a new oem iniector ready incase thats the problem . Two questions . 1 do you know how many ohms a good working injector should be reading ? And 2. When I remove the plenum should or do I have to replace anything gaskets ect ? Thanks !

some people have had lucky reusing the gaskets but i would replace them. not sure on what stock resistance is on them but they will all be the same, if one is outa wack you will see it on the readout. i would test at the ecu connector though not right at the injector. if they show good you would be wasting your time replacing gaskets for no reason.

no unplug the ecu, the injectors have one wire that is constant power on the fuse block, should be the one in the driver side kick panel, fuse number 1 10 amp. pull that and use a needle probe or a piece of wire to stick in there and connect the wire with a alligator clip to one probe of the multimeter. then the other probe you touch to pins 23,22,21,42,41,40 of the ecu connector thats the wire the ecu uses to ground the injector and open it. they should all be similar in resistance and pin 42 is injector 2. page ec-594 for wiring diagram. pulling the plenum is way to much work for a simple check plus always start at the source.

Sounds like mine when I had a cracked plug causing blowout. But if you already checked sparks and coils that it's more likely a cracked ring or other major engine problem. It's almost amusing how many times people think their injectors are bad and almost NEVER is an injector the cause of the issue in the end.
