Question 5at being replaced

my 5at touring z has 19k miles, and today i took it in for a "popping" noise i noticed when shifting from park. also had the brake light on. called the service guy, and he said they ordered new calipers, something else i've forgotten, and a new transmission. all warranty covered, thank God. anybody ever heard of a problem with the 5at?

I saw one being replaced at Reliable Nissan in Albuquerque, NM. Apparently, nothing was showing up on the "Dash" display (i.e., D or M1-5). Nissan replaced for this owner, no question asked.

Mine makes a thumping sound coming out of park. Only after its been driven. Is this normal? I have over 12000miles.

hey erich...got my injen on today...damn..you were right..the cabin noise is freakin louuuuuud..i just hope it doesnt sound rice....the thump noise prob is when your on a hill cause you shift out of park with your foot on the break but your car moves a little..the thump is prob the brake catching the rotor...try doing it on a FLAT road...you prob wont get a thump

i also drive in shifttronic sometimes...it give a chance for better accelleration..but sometimes i feel like im eating up gas

with my cs 5at i drove a majority of the time in manual mode (just seems like more fun). i had 17k miles and no problems. one thing i noticed in both 5ats, and i'm sure many of you have too, is the occasional 2nd gear clunk noise when down shifting in manumatic mode (still makes me cringe everytime it happens). other than that, i've never really heard of a 5at tranny having to be replaced (or even worked on extensively), but it was bound to happen eventually. compared with all the 6mts being replaced, this is nothing.

The reason for that 2nd gear CLUNK on you downshift is due to the torque converter, i wouldnt try and downshift the car that much, you know that point where you hold the shifter toward the negative and wait for the RPM's to drop what you doing is stressing the tranny, not a good idea, but i do know the sound after that first time i stop downshifting my 5AT i only down shift from 5,4,3 not second and sometimes to 1st if im just cruising!!!!

I too use the tiptronic often. You have control of the gears. I know its not a manual, but sometimes I like to relax and not shift. I found out how to skip gears. Going from 5th to 3rd or 4th to 2nd. Dont push the lever all the way but half way. It takes practice. Another reason why I use the tiptronic often is I downshift to slow the car down. Which reduces brake wear.

By the way what kind of mods and what track did you get that time?

i thought downshfting to slow down is a big NO-NO....how can you shift from 5th to 3rd??....wouldnt that throw the car right into 6 or 7000 rpms??

You have to rev match. The tiptronic doesnt have a lockout. You could downshift to the rev limiter(6900rpm).

Haven't had tha car dyno'd yet, cant find somewhere worth while!!! Anyway that was my best time on 94oct, it was chilly out and the humidity was low, other then that run my normal times are 13.8 constantly borderline 13.799 so i run, 13.81,13.8101, so on and so on, its all aboutthe launch in this car i was originally pulling 2.2 and 2.1 60fts, as soon as i got 2.0 60fts, it was cake from there 13.8 all day long!!!!!

Thanks,

Next yr true dual exhaust is at the top of my list! I was checking out Stillens exhaust with the new rolled tips. They claim 13hp to the wheels?

You can downshift into 2nd, but only do it under 30mph as you are braking. I do it all the time after clunking it a few times just after I got it. However, I don't use 2nd gear downshifting for braking. Unless you are racing, its not a practice I would recommend. Brakes are a lot cheaper than wearing out a clutch or converter.
