Default Burning clutch smell on newly purchased '04 z

Hi ppl,

I'm a newbie and I hope you guys can help. I have recently purchased a new z (fairlady in Hong kong). Before I purchased it I did do the usual tests of loading the clutch with stress in 6th gear while on a hill and there wasn't any slipping or the gears didn't pop out. It was about a week ago when I parked teh car on a hill after about 30 minutes drive, went to buy some stuff, got back into the car and drove round the corner when the clutch only came halfway up and wouldn't totally engage into gear! managed to get it down the road very slowly by pulling the clutch out with my foot and got out of the car to smell clutch odor!

I have done some searching and it seems like a common problem on the 07's. Other posts state that it could be a leaking slave cylinder or master cylinder. Others post clutch lines and refilling clutch fluids. I took it to a garage and they are quoting a whooping $1800 (15000HKD) on a new oem clutch and they reckon its not the slave or the master because the reservoir is full? I am no mechanic so any suggestions would be much appreciated. I also constantly smell the odor every time I drive it and the sticking pedal happens when the car is hot but once cooled down it's back to normal. Really don't need to be spending another wack when I have just laid down abit!

Thanks in advanced

You should be able to recognise the burning clutch smell. It is a acrid odor similar to brake pads. Friction between the pressure plate and flywheel causes the smell.

You will have to inspect the pressure plate.

Thanks Davidv for the reply. Yes, I definitely think it's the clutch smelling but would it need re-adjusting or replacing? Would the clutch lines, master or slave cylinder cause the clutch to smell? Sorry for my ignorance.

It's probably the slave cylinder that needs replacement.

Mine was in a similar situation to yours - clutch pedal being stuck on the floor or half way down the floor and wouldn't come back up, was very hard to get it into gear and it just kept slipping..

Brought it to dealership and got the slave cylinder replaced under warranty. If you look at the top of this section, there is a 2007 350z Recall.

So after much contemplation, I decided to go get my clutch and slave cylinder replaced at a reputable dealer. The clutch fluid was also bleed and replaced. After 30mins of driving......guess what...... the pedal is still stuck half way!!! Phoned the garage back up and now they are telling me to change the master cylinder. I'm pretty fed up and thinking of selling the damn thing!
