Default Flywheel Stops.... What do you use?

Over the past year I've used anything from a hefty screwdriver to a pulley wrench and sometimes a basic iron "L" bracket (I found this worked best with the engine on a stand). But I still don't think I've found a good alternative to the $200 Nissan specialty tool.

What are you guys using?

I've done that too, just seemed a little harsh on things.

Heck, it's only $172 here: http://www.costplustools.com/view_cart.asp?catid=

You could build a tool for less. All it would take is a piece of 3/16" steel wire bent into a U to match the tooth spacing. The ends of the U would be bent 90 degrees, and then they would be formed into loops to fit the two bolts where the tool attaches. The ends could also be welded to thick washers positioned to match the bolts. It might need a little bracing, but that's easy enough, too.

You could also use a block of aluminum. Drill two holes for the bolts to hold it to the block. Then drill and tap several holes for long pointed bolts to fit between the teeth on the ring gear.

I thought about trying to fab up something, but I would have to take it to a machinst and the price escalates from there. I've tried grinding and cutting a few custom pieces but the metal (mild steel) normally bent under the force its subjected to. But I haven't taken that possibility (fab-up) off the table yet.

I was considering taking a broken starter, removing the motor and everything rear-ward, then welding the gear into place.
