Hey guys, so ive been getting this very strange and loud noise coming from what appears to be the drivers side belt area. on a cold start, the sound is present through out the whole rpm range.. after about 20 min of driving the noise occurs at about 2k and up (so noise at idle).. the sound is veryyy loud and noticeable..this has been a bout a week now and the sound is getting worse... it kinda sounds like a screeching belt but more severe, maybe a pulley? idk... im 100% certain that it isnt the belts.. ive read all over the forums and ive found a few possible situations: some say a fuel damper, some say timing chain, and ive also read valve ticking but i really dnt know which to connect my problem with.

any aid would be grateful! thnx

Sorry, I don't hear anything in that video that alarms me.

What's the year and mileage?

The only accessory on the driver's side is the AC compressor and an idler pulley. It's not too hard to take the belts off. Do that, and see if the noise goes away. The water pump is driven by the timing chain, so you should be able to run the engine for a short time without the belts. You won't have power steering, so it best not to drive the car, though.

 

Agree. This is not a belt noise. Sounds like an accessory pulley. Worm bearings at the base of the shaft make this metal-to metal-contact. Not certain how to isolate and identify which pulley.

 

Not sure if this is right in the Z world, but in my Mustang days, we used to diagnose pulley/acc issues by running a no-belt/short-belt setup, eliminating each pulley/acc one by one.

 

You might be able to isolate the noise with a stethoscope or rubber hose to the ear, but it's pretty tight quarters for that.

 

It's an 04 with 64xxx miles.

Hmm I'm gonna look into the pulley elimination method..

This. Take a long *** screwdriver or something similair and put it to each centerbolt on each pulley(the part that doesn't spin. You'll here rubbing on all of them. But the faulty one will be noticably louder. The alternator and ps pump can do this also.

Have you tried hitting each pulley with some WD40? It should stop any noise for a few seconds. Similar sound was coming from my friends Trans Am and thats how we found which pulley was bad.

 

my car just did the same thing very recently the noise was a little diffrent more of a squeeky belt kind of noise but would only "chirp chirp" and at diffrent times and not that loud. it turned out the AC belt jumped sidewayz a grove on the belt and is not not riding on one of the pullys correctly going to put it back as we speak

 

replaced the belts again, sound never came back

 

From the second video it sounded like a pulley because thats not a belt screech. Belt would be high pitch that second vid sounded almost like you got cams lol
