Default can somebody identify this sound?

so whenever my car is moving i hear this "sharp metal" type noise coming from the rotors, i think. not to sure though. all i know is it sounds worse every time i drive it. here is a sound clip, it may be kind of hard to hear turn the volume up please

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFPOteGXYoo

could my rotors be warped? or could it just be rust?

thanks a lot. sorry if this has been discussed before, i tried google search "sharp rotor noise" and couldnt find anything.

Do you have stock or aftermarket brakes?

It sounds like it could be the dust shield rubbing.

Need more info. Did you install something? Are they new pads/rotors that were just installed? Took the wheel off and put it on wrong? Hit a curb?

Stock brakes. Brake pads are fine, they were changed out maybe 2 months ago. and yes recently had a little curb incident, but this sound occured about 5 months before then as well. come to think it could be because the car sat still for almost 3 weeks straight...? maybe?

Do you have it sitting outside?

I noticed on my brakes, a little bit of surface rust builds up on the rotors when I leave it sitting outside for a week from humidity. The rust and noise usually go away after a couple minutes of stop and go driving.

yes. mine is not garage kept. it sits outside, but unlike yours, the sound does not stop after some stop and go driving. thats what worries me.

Thanks I googled rotor dust shield and that sounds like it's my problem. What's the best way to bend them back?

Could I just remove the dust shields? Has that been done? Pros? Cons?

Thanks again

Just bend them back with your hand or push them away from the rotor with a screwdriver or something.

One thing you can do to make sure (if you have the proper tools) is to jack up the rear end or front (whatever side the sound is coming from) and set it up on jack stands. Spin each wheel while listening for the sound. Once you find the corner or corners that are making the noise, take the wheel off and inspect the dust shield.

If it is indeed the shield rubbing against the rotor, which is what it sounds like in the video, just do what JERZ350 suggests.

Thread move to the correct location...

You can use tin snips or just pliers to gently bend back the area that is rubbing if this is in fact the issue. Considering that you had a curb incident this likely the cause.

No problemo..

All four corners have them, the fronts may have already been removed by the previous owner (if your Z is used)

Is there a benefit to removing them?

I had to revise mine when I upgraded to the Brembo's and most of the BBK's (if not all) will require you to modify them as well.

You don't need to remove them entirely, you can just cut slits in the shield and peel them back so that your larger rotors can fit.

Thank you. Is it possible to see if the dust shield is the problem without jacking the car up and taking the wheels off? Is it visible maybe by looking though the wheel spokes?

I have the OEM Brembo, do you think removing them will help cool the rotors down faster?

You should be able to see them just by looking through under the car into the rear of the wheel.

Your best bet would be to get it on a lift though and you could tell right away if it is touching since you would be able to rotate the wheel.

Probably not by a noticeable difference, you should upgrade your rotors instead if you want to cool them down more effectively.
