So I have been on a quest to make my Z go faster since I bought it. I have a few mods done... Megan Racing test pipes, APEX'i cat back, JWT Stage 2 Clutch and light weight flywheel, COBB Tuned, and JWT pop charger.
Yesterday I went to the track to break in a set of brand new BFG Drag Radials, and see where that put me. Turned into a bad day. First shake down went ok... second not so much. Started my burnout, went to roll out of it, and BANG... had to push the car off the track and tow it home. There was chunks of carbon fiber all over. Took the car apart today. I now have a two piece drive shaft.
Is this a common occurrence? I could only find one other story of this happening, but it was on a pro charged z...
Any suggestions of what to replace it with? Stock or custom built? I want to eventually make big power and don't want this to happen again...
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I've never seen a Z/G busting a driveshaft. The axles are always the first to go when things go wrong. Did you have some wheel hop issues during the burnout or launch? I wonder if you had prior damage to the driveshaft?
mine broke just like yours.
i would NOT buy a 700 dollar OEM replacement but i would buy a drive shaft from, the driveshaft shop
A new one is like 550 and its way better than stock

Yeah, that is kind of what I was thinking. Figured it would be just as easy to go to an aftermarket maker and get something that is better that what I had for a similar price. I may shoot an email to the driver shaft shop to get more info.

Wow!! Sorry about your hassle, but that is really neat! I don't think it happens often at all but that looks like a classic brittle failure under an applied torque. Do you have more pictures of the broken area? I knew these things were CF, but I didn't think they were hollow. It looks hollow in the pics. No metal base at all?
I didn't get your mileage etc, but I'm almost certain that there will have been a flaw right where it failed. Some rock that bounced under or a 2x4 from thousands and thousands of miles ago, then the right amount of stress was applied and it just completely let go.
I hope you get it fixed and better than ever.

Just to update, went to a drive shaft shop that came highly recommended by a lot of racers at the track. I went by this morning and dropped off what was left of my drive shaft. Turn around is only a few days and the pricing is pretty good, only 230 dollars... and for 450 They said they can build me a completly new and fully serviceable driveshaft.... may be my next investment... when i get it back ill post pictures.
i'm guessing you damaged the prop shaft somehow, most likely during the clutch install. these driveshafts are very strong. SP may have broken one on their 1500hp drag car, but that's a rare case.

damn how you managed to do that, I broke 3 axles, broke my viscous where 5 teeth came out the drain hole, broke my diff cover and sub frame broke the metal spline on the driveshaft but never the driveshaft itself. You sir deserve a medal in my book lol

I guess it was just the shock of extreme traction... did my burn out and as soon as i got out of the water box and hit prepped track it was over...
