yes you should replace it all, you can find a boot but there is already dirt in the joint wearing it out. If it was me I would buy a new lower ball-joint and keep an eye on it, when ever the first sign of wear replace it. But I keep really close tabs on my cars. Or just replace it asap

The black rubber part that you see is the bushing. You cannot buy bushings separate from the lower control arm at a dealer, possibly from somewhere else, however It is wise to just replace to whole control arm because it will come with the bushings already installed. It will be roughly around $900 to replace both lower control arms at a shop. For a DIY job, then it will just be $150-$400 for the control arms.

It is very easy to do it yourself so I wouldn't even consider going to the shop to replace them. And you can find a used control arm in perfect condition for around 30-50 bucks easily.

Yes but you never want to buy the cheapest thing out there. Not to mention buying a used control arm is not the best thing to do in the first place.

Im just saying that if he has the extra money, he should just buy the parts new. He wouldn't have to ever deal with that same problem for possibly another 100k miles or so. My 03 with 90k miles has cracks already in the same place as his, so I'm sure it is a common problem with the Z's

It's the ball joint that's gone bad, and that's part of the spindle knuckle.

That's a much bigger job than replacing the lower control arm.

Which part did you replace, the boot, the ball joint, or the whole knuckle?

Why would anyone in their right mind replace the control arm if just the ball joint seal is torn? It's apples v.s. oranges.

You can replace the ball joints on the car in an hour with the proper tool, and get new ones on ebay for $60 a set.

edit: sounds like someone's mistaking it for the compression rod which has a built in ball joint.
