Default Need some help w/nail in tire

Hi guys,

Picked up a nail in a rear tire...I've been losing pressure slowly (over a week maybe 10-12psi). Anyway, can the tire be patched? If so, do I need a spec5ial patch and what should I ask for?

I've heard conflicting stories...local dealerships say it shouldn't be patched, local tire stores say it can be patched but will lose all speed rating, and a salesman from Tire Rack said if I get a mushroom patch/plug combo it should retain speed rating.

Can someone with some experience give me some advice? I'd really prefer not to buy new tires, as these have only 2400 miles on them.

Thanks a million,
NzZ

PS - I'm in the Va beach/Norfolk area temporarily if anyone can suggest any shops.

I would just patch it. if there is a big-o tires in your neighborhood, they patch tires for free.

I patched my original tires when I got a nail; they couldnt get it off the rim; so they had to do the plug type where they basicly glue a little peice of rubber in there.

I replaced the tires about 2000miles later; but it never lost air or blew up.

I dont know if Id trust it at high speeds tho; should be safe up to 100 or 110 but dont quote me on that.

Patch it and see what happens. Can't go for $250.00 everytime you pick up a nail. That could cost over a grand a year where I drive.

Patching should not be a problem. I've had a couple of tires patched at Discount Tire and never had a problem with the tire after.

I got a screw in mine. Had it patched from the inside (not plugged). They did a good job and I have not had any problems ($25) even at higher speeds

My current stocked tire was patched about 5 months ago, it now has 15,000 miles. It was a rear tire.

It was patched up at Sears, cost about $20. They take the tire off the rims and patch it from the inside using plugs and something else. The pressure in the tire leaked a little so I pumped it up after a month, and it's been fine since.

You know what, 60 bucks sounds like such a great deal now that I have the 350z since a single tire for these guys are like $190.

But I believe you can patch any hole as long as it's not on the sidewall. I don't think any place will even patch a hole for you on the sidewall because it's way too dangerous. There's too much pressure that pushes against the sides of the tire with nothing supporting it.

Hi
I use Discount for all my ZR tires. They will patch on the flat part of the tire, but not if the nail is within about 3/4 inch from the sidewall- damage in the sidewall can cause delamination due to flexing, and will not allow a patch to retain integrity. A plug is for pretty serious holes. Most likely is a buff of the inside wall, the application of some adhesive, then the vulcanizing patch. A bit of rubbing, reassembly and rebalance should be fine.

had mine patched last week, $25, no problem. But @ 8K miles, it looks like the tires will not last past 10K (i am still on the OE RE40's)

I found a screw in one of my rear tires, right inbetween the treads. I was hoping that it hadn't penatrated the entire tire wall, started 'unscrewing' to find out it was 2 inches long! (Don't ask me how a screw would get in that deep. Keep in mind, I wasn't losing any pressure either!)

Anyway, took it to a local tire shop to be patched. They said it was too close to the slide wall and I had to buy a new tire...<sigh> Only had a couple ks on it. I was surprised by their definition of too close to the side wall.

The screw was in the far side crevice between the treads. Thought I was getting railroaded. Took the wheel to my dealer and they plugged it for 10 bucks. No issues since.

sorry for bringing back an old topic , just curious, I see that alot of you take it in to discount tire or big-o for tire/wheel changes? how do they lift the car? is it the same as the service dept at the dealer? I was doing a search on jack points, rim scratching on the Z and such, are these tire places all knowlegeable about the Z, (Are all discount tire etc.. the same?) or do you have to find a good one? and lastly are there places that we shouldnt take it for fixing a tire?
