Default WTF (rear axle clicking sound)

My Z is the last model year made for coupe (2008) and has only 36,000 miles on her. Just this week I started getting a clicking sound every time I back up or accelerate from a stop. Searched the forums and see that this is an issue. A TSB was issued for the earlier models but obviously they did not address the issue in production. My concern is growing for the reliability for these 350z. I have had window issues (starting to come back again), popping clutch (heard this can lead to slave cylinder failure?), speaking brakes, air conditioner system seems not as cold, intermittent low idle, and now this rear clicking sound. I have a 1998 4Runner 4x4 with 175,000 miles on it and would trust this truck more then the 350z in a long distance drive right now! Common Nissan!

So. You think there are no threads here about the axle noise?

Thats why I recommend the RSX. You get performance AND reliability in a single package.

Its just a noise, nothing else. It will not cause a problems if you leave it as is.

See here's the thing, are we sure it won't cause issues just being left?

Briefly reading the tsb fix, it seems that its actual movement in the shaft, this being the case, would leaving it not just wear it worse?

It's not a major issue. It's more cosmetic (aggravating noise) then safety or reliability. All it takes is a little grease to solve the problem. If you're still in warranty, Nissan should fix it for free.

Really? What did they say to you?

Just kidding. Anyway, I'm at 145,000 miles on my 03 and virtually zero problems. Most of the problems you listed are very minor, but I agree some of them are a bit worrisome on a car with only 36k.

Holy SH*T!! That is pretty much EVERYTHING my Z has problems with. My window has stopped working before and came back to life. My AC wasn't as cold as it should have been so we got it recharged. I had low idle sometimes and it would stall right after start up. My control arm bushings are cracked. My radiator cracked and had to be replaced. My clutch slave cylinder failed and left me stranded on Sunday morning, and it is still in the shop getting the clutch, flywheel, clutch fork, and the cylinders replaced and should be done today ($2,000 -___- ). My shocks are worn out which are causing the awful wear on my tires. My steering rack & pinion has a leak which is causing my power steering to go out and has already made it a bi*ch to steer.

Thanks for all the response guys. This is really a great car. Fast, sexy etc etc. I just wish Nissan designed some of these things better. So would this be something covered under the 60,000 5 yr power warranty? Really don't feel like taking the axle apart. Is it really 'safe' to just leave it be?

Please help me fall back in love with my Z, lol. Just bought her a Noah car cover

Jack up rear end, remove wheel , remove axle nut, push axle back as far as possible and grease the splines (heavy grease or some anti sieze) install axle nut, wheel and your done. Simple to do. If you do not do it, you will continue to hear a click , that is it. It will not hurt anything if you do it or not.

That's only half the job..need to also remove the axle and rotate it 180 deg.

Have you tried calling Nissan? My assumption would be no, but you can throw the TSB at them stating it's a known issue and see how far that gets you.
