Question Rumors of imminent new feathering fix

Has anyone else been hearing rumblings and rumors about a new fix about to be announced by Nissan for this issue? I spoke to NNA & my dealer about this a week ago (2nd set of RE040's is feathering & roaring) and they both implied that something was in the works and would be announced within a month or two.

One of them even said (mind you, this is a car dealer) that people would be "very pleased" with the solution. I'm not sure who mentioned it, but I got the idea that the solution is a full set of Michelin Pilot Sports all around. If that's it I'll be happy, as long as it doesn't come with the requirement that I sign a waiver of further claims if the problem doesn't go away.

I hope there is more to the fix than just that.

Yeah, I have always been of the opinion that a final fix would require parts replacement, which is why I won't sign a waiver of right to future complaints. The guy said, though, that they were having the same problems on Infinitis when they were putting the RE040s on them and the problem went away when they went with the Michelins (note that the G35 comes with Pilot Sports).

I remain skeptically optimistic.

I thought some guys with other than OEM tires still had feathering problems, including Pilot Sports.

New tires is not a fix, it is a bandaid. That sloution is only good for those wisheing to drive their cars 5000 more miles and trading them in.

The point here is not NEW tires but DIFFERENT tires. I'm not totally convinced, but I have little respect for the RE040s and I know some people who have done nothing but buy different tires and they're not having feathering issues.

I'd like to hear someone weigh in on WashUJon's question. Has anyone experienced this nasty feathering problem with anything other than the RE040s???? If so, please provide details.

I have Michelin Pilot Sports A/S front and rear and have not noticed the feathering yet, but I only have about 2K miles on them.

Default New tires is NOT a fix

Guys, please don't try and say different tires will fix this problem. This has been beat to death in the tire feathering thread. People have tried Pilot sports, Kuhmo, Toyo, and such - THEY ALL FEATHER.

Myself I have S03's -- arguably one of the best performance street tire out there and it feathered in exactly the same amount of time as the RE040's -- 5000miles.

I'm truly sorry to hear that.

If that's the case, I HOPE this new announcement isn't what I heard it will be.

The G35's feather too. My Blizzaks are starting to show slight signs of uneven wear... but it may be possible that its happening due to the fact that they aren't the factory spec size. My blizzaks are 245/40/18 all around... which means it should be a perfect fit up front, but a bit too small in the back. Who knows. My stock Michelins show no signs of feathering at all though.

johnwoo - not all 350Z's have tire feathering. My coworker with a SB touring has no signs of feathering after 5000 miles. Another friend with a silver 5AT has 12000 miles on his stock RE040s with no feathering. There are plenty of people out there who do not have feathering... just unfortunate that there are a good number of people who do.

hmm...so not all have the feathering issue? is there a vin number cutoff point where there isn't a problem? i don't really want to gamble with the whole tire feathering issue. i was under the impression that all of the 350z have the feathering issue just not all of the owners are aware of it.

I was lucky that my dealership did not have the proper equipment to do the alignment when the TSB came out so my car went to a local alignment shop that had good equipment and some knowledge of what they were doing. I have not had problems since and after talking to the alignment shop they said the toe was way off. I have also caught wind of a new TSB that is supposed to focus on the toe adjustment to fix the feathering issue.

thats not necessarily true check out the feathering thread. many have had the tsb done along with new tires but the feathering is still present. it takes a couple thousand miles for it to show but the "roaring" of the tires seems to always come back. im starting to think that the feathering is everywhere.

TSB is not a fix. even when done right!!! My Z sounds like A monster truck after 2000 miles on the second rotation. called nissan and they said not a fix but a way to get more life from the tires!

brian,

i just switched my Toyo's side to side because of grossly uneven wear on the shoulders. i would be happy to show it to you sometime. i hadn't noticed it until a coworker pointed it out. regardless, i guess my point is that tires doesn't appear to be the fix. i do, however, have aftermarker wheels. wonder if that would matter.....

i believe the only fix is aftermarket shocks and struts either tein, koni, or nismo. is that correct?

Nissan has been working on a "FIX" for over 6 months now. I haven't heard that they are any closer yet to an update.... but then they don't tell me everything they're doing either. So your info might be better than mine. I do know know that EVERY car we've put a suspension kit on be it Nismo, Tein, HKS, etc.. has made the problem go away. Kind of shows you where the real problem is huh?!?

Thanks Jeff. I have thought for along time the shocks are the biggest problem the Z has. That and incorrect front end alignments.
