The dealer is not well compensated by Nissan when replacing your entire transmission. To make up for lower revenue, the dealer will suggest replacing the clutch disc, pressure plate, and associated parts. With only 37K, your clutch a lot of life left in it.

I didn’t take the dealer’s suggestion when they replaced my transmission. The fee was too high ($1800 if I remember correctly). When I inquired about the fee if not in conjunction with a transmission swap, it was the same. Of course it shouldn’t be, so this was another red flag. I’m at 80K now, and the clutch still feels strong.

Thanks for the info! Yea my clutch is fine, however if they gave me a great deal, which I doubt, I would probably do it. Under a G for a new clutch, yea I'll do it, anything more, just the tranny.

^^ Yes, $1K would be worth it. A new clutch assembly will make the car feel better.

My dealer didn't give me a break on the fee, so I decided to wait and get more mileage on my existing clutch. I tried negotiating, but they refused.

I would make your offer and see what they say.

Okay now I understand from the forum about GL-4 and GL-5, can you guys translate what it says in the owners manual. I just want to make sure I know what I am talking about when I go there saying that I want the correct fluid in. Here is a pic of the page from the owners manual:

If they have already agreed to replace the transmission, what do you need to understand?

Fifth gear on mine would chatter every once in a while. If I shift too fast into it or push the shifter excessively to the right while shifting into fifth, you would hear somewhat of a grind noise. Amsoil fixed that! Very quiet now!

About to flush the rest of my car with other Amsoil products.
Recommend Amsoil to anybody!

Called local dealerships and it is about that price. I got quoted around $800 for a clutch and $1,100 for a flywheel. Waiting to hear back from my dealership about the damage.

i would not spend $1000 for a clutch as it really only cost a couple hundred. Look into JWT clutches later down the line when your clutch is actually worn out. Unless you're constantly launching the car at high rpm and resting your foot on the clutch pedal while driving like every women out there does, you are far from needing a new clutch. also, the flywheel is dual mass, there is no resurfacing only replacement. which performance wise i would suggest cro-moly as alternative due to weight reduction without the aluminum flywheel chatter.

I used RedLine since 30k miles. I'm @ 38k now and I will say, when 1st swapping to RedLine, it was super smooth. However, after few thousand miles, it started to feel like original Nissan transmission oil. Slight notchiness, but workable. It may also be the temperature outside, since when I swapped the fluids, it was end of Fall and started to get real cold in TX (by Texas standards). Now it's starting to warm up again so I'll see.

I have heard RedLine takes longer to warm up in cold temperatures, causing it to be notchy in the cold.

Still waiting to hear back from Nissan.

Basically they have my ***** in my vice grip since they said if they deem I need a flywheel and I choose not to change it, they will void my transmission warranty.

The prices seem a little high but I checked how much the parts are going for on courtesyparts.com and the clutch is $585 and the flywheel is $848. The difference i am assuming is the labor. I don't think you should have to pay any labor except to remove and replace the flywheel and clutch. I would ask for an itemized quote to see exactly where all that money is going to.

Yea I saw on courtesy, not sure if they were discounted or wholesale price because when I called the other dealers they told me more.

They said I am only paying for parts, but of course they marked it up to make extra cash.

Car should be ready today unless if I "need" a flywheel.

Do you guys think the car will be back to normal or never the same? I just get scared when they take stuff apart and rebuild.

If I don't feel comfortable with it I am thinking of trading it in for a used Elise. Always loved the Lotus and I can now afford an 05-06 with low miles.
