Default Transmission:Drain and Fill or Flush?

Hello,

I just bought a 2004 Z (auto) yesterday with 72,000 miles on the clock. I would like to change the transmission fluid because it doesn't look like the previous owner changed it.

I would like to take it in to get the transmission fluid changed. Should I do a drain and fill or a flush? Does anyone know the number of quarts needed for either of the two services?

Which would be the best AT fluid to use?

Only use the Nissan J-matic in the Z's auto. It takes a little over 9 qts to fill an empty transmission. You won't be able to drain it all, there will still be some left in the case and torque convertor. Manual says to measure amount drained and replace with equal amount.

Find a copy of the FSM online and check out the MA (Maintenance) section. It has the steps and caveats you need to know.

S-matic is the new J-matic. Use only S-matic fluid.

Don't flush. Drain and fill is best. It'll take about 4 to 5 qrts (possibly a little more) for a drain and fill.

Thank you all for the feedback.

How many quarts do I need to take with me for the drain and fill? Should I do the drain and fill once, or drive it around and do it again?

Take 6 qrts to be on the safe side.

Drive around and repeat for a more thorough drain

Will do.

I was thinking of having them change my coolant also. How many gallons do I need? Which brand do you recommend?

Thanks.

There's a section in the owners manual with the capacities listed. It's also in a Sticky thread at the top of this forum. Look for the one about scheduled maintenance.

Just buy a quality name-brand, don't' get a wally-world special. Mix it with distilled water 50/50. IIRC, it takes about 2 gallons of mix to fill after a drain. Again, you won't be able to get it all out of the system so it never takes as much as the true capacity lists.

Thank you for the info! I'm going to get to it.

omg you are so funny.. -___-

I remember doing a tranny fluid change in an '11 Civic with 50k. My GF's 05 Altima has 100k miles and I want to do it on hers.

I cant remember correctly what I did. I drained the fluid, and refilled with the exact amount that came out. Do I do the same for the Altima with 100k? or do I empty half of the used fluid and refill with new fluid?
