Default K&N Air Filter Install

I know, a child could do it. But here it is anyway for the
mechanically impaired.

Here's the factory airbox.

Unsnap the two retaining clips and withdrawl the air filter
assembly which will look like this.

Remove the old filter and discard it. Unpack the new and
improved K&N filter which looks like this.

Here's a comparo of the two (2) filters.

Here's the air box with the filter removed. Make sure you clean
out the air box after removing the filter (Thanks Dr. Bonz). It will
certainly contain leaves, bugs and the occaisional squirrel.

The filter comes with two (2) self adhesive rubber strips.
These will have to be attached to the filter housing as shown.
I notched mine out with a razor blade so they would fit over
the ribs in the housing.

Here is the prepped filter housing.

Install the new filter in the housing.

Insert the housing back into the air box as shown.

That's it. You're done. Now get ready for an extra 30 or 40 horsepower from this mod.

Nice job. One thing to note here. When you take out the old filter, make sure you clean out your airbox before installing the new K&N. There is almost always some debris (leaves, twigs etc) in there. I know there was with mine.

More like 1-5,

I am happy with mine, love the part where you never have to buy another filter, just clean every once in a while depending on driving conditions.

Another word about these air filters that use the oil spray.

BE CAREFUL, and do not put on too much oil when you clean and re-oil. I have heard of horror stories of people putting too much oil on the filter.

There is no doubt that the K&N filter flows much better than the factory filter. Hold each up to a light source and look through them and that fact will become fairly obvious. The engine is basically a pump and more air flow through it, provided you maintain optimum air/fuel ratios, will neccessarily produce more power. If the factory exhaust is more restrictive than the intake tract then it wouldn't make much difference but even in that case I don't see how it could result in a loss of power. I use them on my Sportsters and combined with a free flowing exhaust they make a world of difference. So much so that the carbs have to be rejetted to add more fuel (Do a search on "The Harley Tax" if you are interested). Add to that the fact that K&N filters are re-usable and can go many thousands of miles between cleanings and it seems like a pretty good investment (~$45) for anyone wishing to keep the factory air box. My gut feeling so far tells me that my motor is happierwith the K&N.
