Default Key FOB?

There's a lot of old threads for this, but none with a straight answer. One more try?

2003 350Z won't enter programming mode for the life of me(The part where the hazards are supposed to flash after inserting and removing the key). I've tried 50+ times, messing with timing, locking and unlocking, even rolled the window down, locked it from the outside with the key and rolled the window back up and tried it(out of frustration). The previous owner, a really good friend of mine, also tried this multiple times with no result.

Is the key supposed to be chipped? From what my friend told me, it's the original and only key he's ever had for the car. Key sets alarm and rolls windows down, panel lock sets alarm, alarm works. I've checked fuses and disconnected/reconnected the battery.

Anybody? If there's some thread I missed(which I highly doubt), that'd be cool to. Not that it's really that important, but this is turning into a personal/pride thing.

The key is chipped. From my understanding, some are just a pain in the *** to program.
