I think I have read that the Z’s manual is an Aisin transmission. Just because Nissan North America is reluctant to supply parts, doesn’t mean they’re not available. Transmission repair shops etc get any and all of these parts through different distribution channels. Some updated synchro parts are also available. Check with a trans specialist to see where to order. In past years other members here have obtained synchro parts and reported that they were quite inexpensive.

If you look in the cars for sale marketplace, Jblz has a track oriented Z for sale. His ad states that the transmission was rebuilt with oem parts. You could check with him about the parts supplier.

Also, years ago some people reported a fault with some of the early 03 third gear units. It seems that the shift adapter ring, which is brazed to side of the gear, was coming lose. By using a stronger brazing compound or welding or somethiing they reported a satisfactory fix. So look into/research that as well.

My trans has been doing the same thing since I bought it (66k, 85k now). A good friend of mine is a transmission Mech (30+ years) and he can supply the parts for a "real" build for $1700, yes this is at cost. It includes upgraded rings and a hardend 2nd and 5th gear, But I plan on doing a full FI build, or lsx swap when I get back from deployment.

No, the parts price is legitimate. I didn't state a rebuild cost. Aside from parts it wouldn't cost me a dime, just trying to give him an idea for parts. Are we done?

You don’t want to repair a problem 2003 transmission; if you are having a problem with a 2003 transmission, you should replace this with the updated version. Everything about the updated transmission is much better than the original problem transmission.

What Spike said.

You can find a used CD009 for around 500-600 dollars and have it installed and have about 1000 wrapped up in it after labor costs. I just had a shop quote me $400 for an install and LKQ has a CD009 for $575 an hour away from me.

Likewise, the same shop said to rebuild the current trans I'd have at least $2500 in it because pretty much everything will have to come directly from Nissan.

If i were to rebuild/replace synchros i would be doing it with a buddy of mine who is a mechanic, and we would be installing the transmission so no need to pay a shop for it ... and what is LKQ?
