synchro issues...
Im depressed. The first Z I sold came in today because of some shifting problems. I read another thread about this problem...
And it seems like, according to my mechanic, that the synchros arent calibrated exactly on some models such as his (on early vin # cars) I dont know how Nissan messed this one up. but we put new synchros in there and re adjusted his clutch release and it is working fine according to the owner. Most problems that the Z is having can be fixed under warrenty obviously. Some issues cant though. These particular issues are more of a quality matter such as rattles and such that can be attemted to remedy or you yourself must get creative and try to stop. Check all the screws is all i can suggest!

What was exactly the persons problems with the Z?
I currently have two things bothering me (mellow grinding sound at 5th after long drive which comes and goes below 2000rpm, and hard to shift from 1st to 2nd with "klunk" type sound) I dont know if it will go away after breakin or if I should take to the dealer now for them to take a look at.

All I can say is that if the shifts wont engage at high rpm, have trouble downshifting w/ the clutch engaged, and unusual grinding, basically any problems shifting. i mean most of us have driven a standard that shifted correctly so you know what to expect. my maxima shifts like a dream. the only z ive test driven shifted exactly the same way, but that was 2 weeks ago so it was a higher vin number. rule of thumb on the vins is first couple of months on release date(august, september). but low vin number may not apply. I recently recieved a letter from nissan of america stating some recent issues about this. they observed about a 1 in 25 ratio for this problem according to last months service records. so if your having some trouble w/ tight shifting, wait till its broken in, and if its still doing it, simply take her in for an evaluation.
Nissan has not contacted me about any rattle issues. i am attending a mid south dealers assoc. meeting on Jan 2 to address any issues i have come encounter w/. I will surely take into consideration any problems you guys would like to report.

Im around 1500vin as well, but still under break in, but I did rev it once to like 5000 and missed the shift to 3rd.... it just didnt want to go in. but so far Ive chaulked that up to my own fault. Ill wait till the break in is over and I am taking it to redline more often. while I hope its not a problem. if the shifter can somehow become better than it is now, thatd be cool. cause I thought it was pretty good, but I dont have experience with other manuals really.

You said "rule of thumb on the vins is first couple of months on release date(august, september). but low vin number may not apply. "
Could you please explain what you mean by this sentence a little more clearer??
Thanks...

regarding transmission
i had a question regarding my transmission. i'm currently at about 350 miles(how ironic), and i notice the "clunking" sound from first to second gear that selski referred to in the above post. there was also a time when i was driving at a low speed and attempted to shift gears, while fully depressing the clutch, but then it was as if i pulled the car out of gear without stepping on the clutch at all. i'm not taking this too seriously because it doesn't happen too frequently and i have yet to see if it will be there when the break-in period is over, but i am concerned about this sound that i hear while inside the car with the windows rolled up(sound can be heard clearly only while windows are rolled up). i am assuming that the sound is coming from the flywheel. it is kind of like a spinning/rubbing metal sound coming from the tranny. when i depress the clutch, the sound goes away, but as soon as i release it the sound comes back. my 1979 280zx makes the same sound, maybe it's typical to rear wheel drive manual transmission cars? does anyone have any idea? any replies would be appreciated. thank you.

Selski12 & NismoEagleRock,
I have the same "klunking" sound. Loud enough to hear it inside. I also have the 10/30 delivery date. If you find something, please let me know. I will probably stop by at the dealer sometimes this week.

Slexis200, I had the same scenario...took the car in for simliar reasons, they gave me the "could not duplicate the issue" speech.
Now, after driving it some more, I can't tell if it is in my head or that I do need to be concerned. My Vin is low #903. I think it appears ok, but wish they would go ahead and check the specs for the clutch etc....for peace of mind at this point.

your nissan dealer is gunna be stingy about fixing the issues or even attempting to fix them just because they dont wanna pay for it, believe me i know. so take it to another dealership to get it checked out, preferably one that knows something about nissans. dont take it to another nissan store is what im sayin. another place will gladly work on it eventhough the key here is not to let them work on it but to get an estimate. then take it back to your dealership w/ the estimate report and then see if they will work on it when they see another mechanic has looked at it and possibly found a problem. all of the mechanics are the same at this point. they all call nissan for assistance. so thats probably what the dealership that you take it to to get evaluated will do. then, like i said, take it back to the nissan store. be blunt w/ them and tell them that since yall wouldent look at it, someone else would. make somethin up like, ide rather pay to get it fixed while under warrenty and keep my business elsewhere than yall give me the run around. they will be glad to help you then.
it might cost you something to get it checked out, but then it wont to get it fixed. but hey. its up to you and your checkbook to fix the issue. i know, you should just be able to take it in and get it checked out. but cars arent that easy these days

Yeah I'm kinda concerned about this tranny problem. Not because it might be happening, but rather that I'm not sure how to diagnose IF I even have it. I guess only driving some more will help build a better picture of what malfunctioning really means. I'll pay more attention to the 1->2nd gear transition and see if I can see if I get the same sounds. Perhaps it's normal?
Oh well. We'll know in a few weeks or so.

VIN 559
No problems noted assuming the ones described above are QUITE noticeable. Have 3200 miles on it and getting ready for a long drive this weekend.
Hope if anything is going to happen, it will happen now rather than at ClubZ day at Thunderhill on Dec 14 (BTW, there is still room).
