Default Blown differential ?

Last week I got lazy and had my oil change at an exxon oil change places , they suggested i should also change the differential fluid . Initially I said no but like any salesman the guy kept pushing and I said ok . I didnt use the car all week until today and all of a sudden i feell this hard shaking and smoke coming from under the car . When i saw the smoke i could swear it was coming from the differential, and I am sure it has something to do with the differential service. What could they possibly have done wrong and how much do you think it would cost me if in fact the differential is blown?

Sounds like they didn't put enough oil back in it, used the incorrect oil, or left the drain plug loose and it fell out.

Check the oil level in it, and if you can get anything in there to suck some oil out see how thick it is.

How much was the car driven between the "servicing" and the blow-up?

Seems like a differential would give LOTS of warning (howling and grinding) before giving up completely because the oil was wrong or not there. Unless of course you were driving the **** out of it.

Good luck getting them to fix it, even if it's their fault.

Never get someone else to do your oil or any fluid changes. If u do yourself you know its done properly with the proper fluids. If u dont know how, look on the internet. I would never trust anyone but myself. With that said, sorry to here, sounds like they drained it and didnt even fill with anything. Take the top bolt out and see if fluid drains out a bit. Or stick your finger in the hole, te fluid level should be right up to the top. If not, it was under-filled. If so, go back with a oil pump gun, find the ****er that did it. Shove that nossel up there *** and show them how its done. "Proper"

Really not easy to blow a diff unless not filled.

i let someone else do my transmission/diff oils. then again, i know them and trust them and they always do a good job. not to mention i get to watch as well, but i would trust him regardless. if they wont allow you to watch, go somewhere else. or do it yourself.

if you havent, take the advice of these other guys and open up the fill hole and check to see if there is even fluid in there. if not, talk to the service center. go up the chain of command until you get reimbursed for whatever damage there is. and never go there again. haha!

Even half full would last years under street conditions. You could fill it with 5w30 and it would last years. My truck had the diff flooded with water for 4 years and never went out

I helped a friend install a welded diff in his 240SX at 2am the night before an event (this was after he blew up his actual LSD the day before). Because it was 2 in the morning, no stores were open and we didn't have any gear oil. We filled it up with 15w40 diesel truck motor oil.

He ran it the next day in an all day drift event. No problems. Just drained and filled with proper fluid before the next event.
