I've never heard of that suggestion before, I didnt know they made that product. That's actually really cool, but I am VERY wary of the last sentence. "Because of the very narrow window in which this product was designed to function as a bolt on solution, this product may require adjustment through the life of the clutch." What very narrow window? And by adjustment do they mean I need to tighten everything every 10K miles?

Ok so Rosenthal Nissan (Tysons Corner) said that Nissan won't cover the part since it was already 'fixed'. The dealership mechanic said that I probably need a new clutch and maybe even a new flywheel, and he must be a magician to know this without even opening the tranny. The clutch/slave replacement will be $2850, and the flywheel replacement will be an additional $1100.

The Nissan Specialist called me and basically said that since the car is out of wtty, tough ****, no assistance can be provided. Even though Rosenthall fixed the slave in 2008/3K miles, I doubt they will cover the exact same part 6 years/34K later. I'm seriously looking into that external slave/bell housing above, i called, and that 'narrow window' and 'adjustment' verbiage means they got the design nearly perfect, but the slave cylinder needs to be retorqued to spec every 10-15K. Since its on the outside, i'm fine with that maintenance.

nissan wont do anything bro, i seriously doubt you need a new clutch, but if you are going to do it now would be the time.

If the clutch isn't chattering or jerky I'd say it's fine....as long as it isn't soaked with brake fluid.

likely not soaked as the leak goes through the bell housing and onto the ground.

But, I want to order the Z1 Motorsports Clutch Concentric Slave Cylinder Elimination Kit. Has anyone tried this or heard reviews about it? The Z1 post about this is from 3/14/2014, so its really new. Maybe a new thread is needed....

Man, I wouldnt hold them to that cost. I recently had my G in the shop for the samething. My warranty covered everything but the cost of the slave cylinder and the labor to install it. It ended up costing me $800. But they recommended a clutch replaced which was right at $2000.

All together if the other parts werent covered under the warranty it would have ended up costing right at $1500 to replace the slave cylinder, hose, and clutch master cyl.

I think there just trying to get every dime they can out of you at those prices. Some of the parts and labor SHOULD be covered under warranty if you purchased it from Nissan.

I called the body shop that is within walking distance from my house. If I buy the Z1 slave cylinder kit, they will take that part and install for $500.

Is there any reason why this wouldnt work?

you will be fine, that is what i did..... but make sure that they know that the slave is internal on this model......

Are you sure you want a body shop doing mechanical work on your Z? Do they understand that they'll have to drop the tranny to install the new slave? Do they have the expertise to do a full mechanical assessment of the clutch/flywheel?

Beyond this, as long as the tranny is out, you may as well take a good look at the clutch disc, pressure plate and flywheel. If any of them are badly worn, it will only save you money to have them replaced at the same time. At the very least, I'd purchase a new clutch disc and have them replace that wear component at the same time. If that hose I told you about is leaking, you'll need to replace that at the same time, or the repair will be FUBAR.

To the both of you above, I explained to the mechanic that the reason I was ordering a new bell housing is because in this new part, the slave is outside. In my current model, the slave is inside. He seemed to understand that. Also, hes asian. I always assume all asians mechanics know asian cars.

As for replacing my clutch and flywheel, i'll ask them if it needs it but isnt that a bit rash at 37,000 miles? Surely these things last more.

well techinically you are right, i dont. I'm getting this kit (below) because it will result in a permanent fix of my main issue: a new, non-nissan slave. And if that slave fails, I can get to it without dropping my tranny since it is now external

Right, I know the Z1 kit and what it does. Im just a bit confused as to why you need a new bellhousing for the kit. The Z1 is a replacement, nothing new is required really.

Hmm. maybe its me. Whats the difference between the bell housing and the transmission case? I thought they were the same thing. Is the bell housing the complete unit, and the transmissions case just the part that the Z1 is replacing?

The bellhousing is the front (bell-shaped, duh) removable section of the transmission, which encloses the clutch. The trans case (aka gearbox) is the mostly-cylindrical case which contains the gears, bearings, shafts, shift forks, etc. The case is sealed, while the bellhousing usually has some openings to the environment. They're not always separate, but most often are.

so the bell housing is the right most part, which is connected to its left by the transmission case? And this Z1 part is just a replacement of the transmissions case? I want to make sure I have my terms (and my facts) straight.

you are all kinds of confused... the z1 part goes inside your existing trans, and then has the external slave like the de's. there are holes for you to mount the slave on the outside of your motor. the jim wolfe trans you posted up is for a DE

Dude just no. All your getting from the Z1 kit is something that basically puts a fork inside the bellhousing on the input shaft of the transmission, and the exactly what you see on the outside of the transmission in the picture which is the bracket and the new slave cylinder. Your not changeing bellhousings or transmissions. Your adding a parts thats getting rid of the internal slave.

And no, the bellhousing is the left part of the transmission case that encloses the clutch,flywheels, and input shaft. The actual transmission is the right part that connect to the driveshaft which contains all your gears. You are definitely some kind of confused on this.

oh, i see (i think). Since the whole picture was of the case with the slave outside, I thought I would be buying this new case with the slave outside. My current OEM case is the same thing, this part just makes it so I can install their Z1 slave outside. This would make sense as I missed the small pictures to the left, which are of the actual part.

Seems so, but I wonder what the "feel" will be like, based on the effective hydraulic ratio between the new master/slave and the OEM. The OEM setup is far from ideal, so maybe the Z1 will be better.

Might also want to install the RJM adjustable clutch pivot/pedal assembly, which is my single most favorite mod on my '08 - totally changed the driving experience, and I've been exclusively driving MT cars for 40 years (yes, I'm that old).
