Is the dealership messing with me?
Guys,
I have looked through the hundreds of threads comparing the different oil filters and cannot find an answer to this question. I was at the dealership replacing my window motor and I asked them to go ahead and change the oil. I had a new K&N filter in the car and asked them to use that filter. They came back and recommended not to use the K&N and use the Nissan filter because the Nissan filter has a pop-off valve inside to store oil so that on a cold start, oil gets to the engine quicker.
Does anyone know if this is correct or are they just pushing their parts on me? The K&N filter is what I've used in the past with no problem but have never head this from the stealership......
Thank in advance

I never use OEM filters. Most filters have a check valve to prevent oil from draining back or out of the filter. The only filters I would stay away from is FRAM, they have had a problem with the check / pop off valve in the past and get very poor reviews overall. K & N makes very good filters, it sounds like you did a search already so I'm sure you have a good idea what oil filters rank high. However, with all that said, the dealer will always recommend their / OEM products. I think they were just trying to be nice and not just ask you if you were kidding asking them to install parts you happen to have in your car. That's kind of like bringing your own eggs and ham into a dinner and asking them to cook it up for you.

The dealer is always screwing you. The local dealer here tried to tell me my clutch needs replacing (quoted $1,400 plus tax haha) because it "catches high"- he said "I've driven the G35 and it felt a lot different". Sadly this service advisor was not smart enough to realize the clutch in the 350z catches high as that's how it's designed. Mind you my cluch doesn't slip one bit and has not been abused.
Let's just say I don't get my work done at the dealer, just oil changes. And I've worked at Mike Barney Nissan where they would joy ride in customers cars.. One tech even forgot to tighten the bolt and oil spilled out on a customers driveway from his NEW Maxima.
The dealer charges about $110 per hour when your local mechanic will charge about $60. They also charge by book hours, where if they finish sooner you still pay the quoted price.

Not all facilities are equal. In a lot of situations you get what you pay for. You will always run into that 'dumbass' at any business, this includes Service Advisors, Technicians, etc.
Flat rate is what you are referring to, oldschooluneducated350z. If a job quotes 3 hours and it took a technician 6, would you want to pay 6 hours? Think about it, genius.
Tell me where you gentleman work & I'll present some antagonistic comparisons such as what you have displayed.

Thanks for the replies. You're right, you will always have someone in the dealerships who doesn't know what they are talking about. IMO, a service advisor shouldn't be able to get the job unless they have spent time turning a wrench. In many instances they have never actually done the work they are quoting.
I will go ahead and keep the K&N filter and install at the next change. After doing the research, it seemed to be one of the better choices by most users.
Thanks!
