Default noob question about torque wrench

ok so i understand how to use one and all. my question is, my wrench only clicks when a bolt is in a position such as the lug nuts. but if a bolt is at an angle like spark plugs or if the bolt is straight up or straight down, it doesnt click. is this how torque wrenches are suppose to me? does it only click in certain position?

As dcains says, your torque wrench should click even if it's tilted (or upside down for that matter). Of course, you'll want to make sure the fastener is not cross-threaded and has a full grip on the bolt or nut you're attempting to torque.

A friendly word of advice: If you don't know how to use a torque wrench, don't go playing around with your spark plugs. It's a pain to re-thread a stripped plug hole.

Just curious, you use the same torque wrench for lug nuts and spark plugs? A 1/4 drive torque wrench in in-lbs is ideal for spark plugs. Anyway, glad you found the problem.
