Default Car won't go above 2500 rpm sometimes w/ video

Hey guys, I know there has been a lot of topics on this but I feel like I'm having a little different problem. I just bought my 08 350z about a month ago. Just recently I got used to the aftermarket clutch and flywheel so I have been going pretty hard on it. Just last week I was doing a highway pull and when I let off I realized the car wasn't letting me go past 2500rpm. It doesn't happen all the time, only sometimes when I redline a couple of gears. Whats weird is that once I turn the car off for about 10 seconds and turn it back on everything is fine. I did my research and saw people suggesting maf sensor. I have custom air intakes if that helps at all. Please let me know what you think or if anyone has the same issue.

If you're using filter oil on your air filters, it couldn't hurt to clean the MAF sensors. I'm kind of surprised you're not getting a CEL for something like what you're experiencing. For what it's worth, Nissan put a lot of R&D into the factory intakes, and you're not going to do much better with an aftermarket version short of a CAI that's going to be way more expensive than it's worth considering what you get in return.

The problem could also be a bad TPS, but again, your car should be throwing a code for something like that.

Zakmartin thanks for the quick reply! According to the previous owner, he was able to achieve maximum hp output with a custom air intake and custom exhaust. He provided me with dyno sheets and currently has the car tuned to 295whp. I have a cobb accessport I am going to be plugging in soon and see if it will say anything. Again, thanks for the reply.

No problem. It would have been helpful if you stated in your first post that your car was set up for a piggy-back computer that may or may not still be on the vehicle.

There are many threads re: Cobb Accessport issues:

295 whp with a home made intake and a custom exhaust or does that include every other bolt on part available? That is an odd problem, I would ditch the home made things the z is a bit sensitive.

Thank you for your help guys. But the tune and custom filter and exhaust were all done by a performance shop here in florida. Nothing was done amaturelly. The car runs beautifully and is very fun to drive. Its just this rpm problem I'm trying to figure out and why it only happens when it wants too. Today I was flooring the **** out of it and everything was fine.

you prob have a small vacuum leak on the intake or something.... i had a pair that did that, it just didnt like them, sometimes it would be fine and others go into limp mode like yours is

Ive see lots of cars that wont rev past whatever rpm but they usually throw a code and a restart doesn't solve their problems. These cars usually have a clogged intake or a clogged catalytic converter. Or other blockage of air in or out. Dont know how your not throwing a code. Do you have an obd2 scanner? Does the car still have catalytic converters? Is the car just using the factory ecu now?

I have an accessport. That can be used as a scanner righr? The car does have catalytic converters. And it is using the factory ecu.

The cats also seem to be custom made. Forgot to mention that. I will be checking for minor leaks on the air filter and I will be plugging my accessport and talking to the shop that tuned the car. I will definitely keep you guys posted.

LOL! George, if you can think of ANYTHING else that's aftermarket that could be causing the problem, list it in your next post.

Alright so I talked to the person who tuned my car and it turns out that he is the owner of the performance shop and he was involved in the whole process of the car. The previous owner seemed to be a horsepower freak and was trying to compete with a couple of his friends (like we all do) and slapped on gigantic custom air filters and had the shop tune the car to calibrate the extra air. It supposedly took the tuner all night to get the car tuned perfectly so thats where I will be starting. I want the car to run healthy so I will be slapping on some aftermarket air filters or possibly the stock ones back on and have the car retuned for the custom exhaust only. So that should rule out the air filter problem.

He also mentioned that these cars often have throttle body syncing issues after a tune up and it might be that both of the throttle bodies aren't syncing up with the throttle and it puts it into limp mode. With the stock or aftermarket air filter and a retune should take care of that problem as well.

Roger (the owner/tuner) also suggested cam position sensor but we quickly ruled that out because the computer should through a code for that and the car usually acts differently if the cam position sensor is messed up.

I plugged my accessport in and ran diagnostic and codes P0131 and P0151 popped up for O2 sensor bank 1 and 2. Roger mentioned that was weird that they both are acting up at the same time cause that usually doesn't happen. Neither do these codes relate to the problem I am having but Its good to find out about it (not really/more work lol).

Most important piece of information I got from roger is the oil temperature sensor. He says that the hr engines came with an oil temp sensor and if that is acting up and tells the computer that the oil is warming up above its average temp, it would cause the car to go into limp mode.

Just thought I'd keep you guys posted since you are helping. I will be getting my hands dirty sometime next week after I'm done with these ******** college responsibilities and hopefully my baby runs good and I can drive it hard again. haha Thanks guys!
