my car is making a weird noise when rolling/in motion...sounds like metal rubbing?
it's like the sound you hear when you see some old cars, it sounds like something metal spinning underneathe the car, but then there's something rubbing/lightely touching it...it's happening when i accelerate, or am rolling in neutral (after accelerating)...i'm pretty sure it's coming from the rear passenger side? i've heard this so many times on other/older cars but have no clue what it is....help please
it's almost like when a dish is spinning on the floor soming to a stop, but it's metallic, and very light...

i've been searching, i've read everything from rattles to road noise...
another attempt at a description of the sound: almost like some bb's spinning around on a metal plate really fast, the sound softens and gets louder sporadically

Wow, sounds like the same problem I've been having, coming from the passenger side, faint, metallic rattle, only when rolling. Nope, don't know what it is and neither does my mechanic who looked at it. I was just planning to take it to a dealership next time.

I had the same problem...
the dealer tighten some axel nuts and relubed the axel and break parts, ---> didnt work
Then, I took apart the rear strut stabilizer bar and isulated it with foam. --->the silver Z bar doesnt rattle anymore, but the sound was still there.
The dealer redid the axel and lubing etc---> still there
I fiddled with the strut casing, jiggled it a bit and tighten the 2 visible bolts...and on the drive to work and home...no noise....
We'll see how this goes long term...if not its trip # 3 to the dealer.

it got even worse today
the sound is now coming from underneath the car, it doesn't happen all the time, so i dunno if i go to the dealer i would be able to replicate it...though it seems like its getting worse.... now it sounds EXACTLY like a round metal plate flopping around (spinning) on the floor before it comes to a stop!!! this is my first manual car so i dunno if it's the clutch or not...... i'm also starting to get a tick/knock every once in a while....
anybody have any clue what it could be...
p.s. when i was searching i also read about the axle and how dealers need to tighten the bolts...that is a different problem, which i also have, but never knew what it was, didn't really bother me that much though...the tick/knock i'm describing isn't from that, but comes from underneath the car near the driverseat somewhere...i hope it isn't my tranny

i haven't heard it in a couple of days...maybe it's gone? i know something wrong though...i'm afraid to "push" the car now, i wanna just go to the dealer and tell them about it, but i doubt they're gonna know what's up... the track is opening up soon, i don't wanna break something at the there, then i'd be beat!
there's no way it could be the seat....i still haven't heard anything these past few days... my first guess would've been the clutch or flywheel, but this is my first manual car, so i dunno enough... i wouldn't really worry if it was some little thing that went away, but it sounded really bad! (imagine dropping a rotor on the ground and it starts spinning on the floor before it lands flat)
p.s. what's the throughout (throwout?) bearing do? i remember somebody w/ a g35 coupe telling me how they had a problem w/ their clutch and t-bearing, and the dealer said they've been driving around w/ their clutch in peices or something.... maybe i'm having a similar problem

But i noticed my Z making this noise yesterday, then again just 20 minutes ago... The first time i pulled over and stopped... visually inspected all the pads/rotors.. nothing. It went away when i pulled back onto the on-ramp.
Today was pulling into a parking lot.
I do need to do the brakes, but only cause i want to do them before they really need it (Have probably 10K left on them?)
2005 touring, 38K All stock aside from exhaust...
Ideas?
I havent looked yet as my tools are all 75 miles away
If it's a wheel bearing, you might be able to make the sound come and go by "loading" one side of the car and then the other.
It won't fix the problem, but it might help you nail down what/where it is.
i.e. if the sound gets worse when you turn to the right, (put "force" on left side of the car) then the problem could be a problem with the left side of the car. And vice versa.

^^^^^i think wheel beaing to........also check the hats that are on the back of your brake rotors.....i had this happen to me and it was the metal hat rubbing the inside of the rotors. if it sounds like it in the wheel, jack up your suspected wheel and see of the tire shimmys if so its a wheel bearing.....super easy fix
