I know my post count is low, but I get on here a decent amount just to read up on things. I've searched as much as I can for an answer to this, and I can't seem to find it.

2007 Z. I went to change my plugs this morning and can't seem to get the spark plug socket all the way down in the hole to grab the spark plug and bring it back up. It seems like it's getting caught on a lip so to speak in the hole. I attached a pic as reference.

I've got 2 types of spark plug sockets - a rubber inside and a magnetic type. They're the same size and neither are working. Any one else have this issue? Am I doing something wrong?

Is the spark plug threaded all the way out?.If so just use a telescopic magnet

 

Correct. I made sure to put both sockets on the new spark plug to verify that they would fit, and both would.

I wish. I can't get a socket down far enough to even come close to removing it. I took a regular 14mm socket and put it in the hole just for the hell of it and it went right down, but clearly couldn't pull out the spark plug. The sockets just keep getting stuck on that lip in the picture. The second lip that you can see.

Is there a specialty tool for the HR?

 

Pretty sure there's one size smaller spark plug socket for some vehicles.I'm certain I've used on before but can't remember the size.Or perhaps a thin walled socket.

I looked around online and found this guy. It looks like it may do the job. It's made specifically for the BMW twin turbo engines, but I can only imagine this is going to get the job done.

What do you guys think? I seriously can't be the only person that has ever had this issue...

 

That should work. I used a craftsman thin walled 14mm. Then used one those magnet on a sticks to loosen the last few threads and pull the plug out off the hole.

 

I bought a socket from Autozone that worked no problem

 

I have umpteen million 5/8 sockets in my box....and i changed plugs about a month ago. Never had any issues with what you're saying? I did notice you had to wiggle and push to get it to seat right on the plug with the rubber version of the socket. But had zero issue taking them out or installing new ones?

 

An 18" piece of fuel line hose shoved down the insulator of your plug will give you enough wiggle room to unscrew the last bit of thread and pull the plug out.

 

Just thought I would let you guys know that the socket I mentioned above ended up working well, in case someone else runs into this same issue. When I originally tried, I wasn't putting enough pressure to have it seat on the spark plug. I went back shortly after and was able to get them all done in about 45 minutes.
