Question Transmission Whine in Specific Gears

Hey everyone. I know there are a lot of threads concerning whining noises, but none of them seem to fit the problem I'm having. I just bought an '03 MT 350z about a month and a half ago. It has 82,000 miles. In 2nd, 5th and 6th gears under light load only, I notice a whining noise. It's the amount of throttle you would use to maintain your current speed. However, if I accelerate a bit harder or take my foot off the throttle completely, it goes away.

Can anyone think of what this might be / if it's normal / if I should or should not worry about it? Thanks!

Yes it was changed a couple of months ago, according to the previous owner.

Those transmissions sound like a truck, whan whan, with a touch of spider gear noise.

Did the owner told you it was done or he showed you paperwork from the shop?

And if he did it himself, and bought at Auto Zone, etc there should be a paper trail of work performed.

^^^ This is highly probable. '03 transmission has no triple cone synchronizers and the singles in it are pretty susceptible to gear whine when wrong fluid is used. Important to use correct fluid with proper amount of friction.... Redline MT-85 or factory fluids are the only ones that have the necessary modifiers. Others might work but might as well go with proven solution.

I'm betting that changing the fluid with the right stuff will cure your issue.

Thanks I will definitely look into which fluid the previous owner used.
