you need a pump to fill the tranny fluid.

the only way is to jack up the car.

just be sure to loosen the fill plug first

Differential and Manual Transmission are not accessible from the engine bay. Car must be jacked up on jackstands.

N8vz makes a good point...to make certain that you can remove the fill plug before draining the oil.

I'm assuming you have MT car. If not, auto trans has special fluid requirement. Don't use REDLINE or any other aftermarket brand in AT!!! There is no engine bay fill like regular AT because Nissan is paranoid about people putting in the wrong stuff.

on the manual wrx there is a dip stick where you can fill up the tranny. the Z does not have this.

Hi
The transmission oil is "special". It is known as Type T-IV. There are three suppliers that exist presently- Nissan dealers, AMSOIL, and very recently, CASTROL TransMax-J. This stuff all retails out at about 7-8 bucks a quart.
You can drain some of the oil by opening the drain plug at the bottom of the AT pan. Measure the amount drained out, then replace it with new AT fluid through the little pipe at the back of the engine near the firewall by the number plate. You can identify it easily-- it has a funny little bent metal/top hat breather with a Nissan warning on it. You need a wrench to remove the bolt and the top hat. THIS IS NOT THE OIL FILLER WITH THE YELLOW RING!!!!! There is no dipstick, so you have to be accurate about measuring the amount you drained out. Carefully refill the transmission through the little pipe- you have to be patient as the fill rate is pretty slow. Use a small funnel to help.
DO NOT USE REDLINE AND OTHER OILS- there is something different about the formulation of the AT oil that Nissan uses- it feels different on your fingers.
Good luck. Some of the lube places can help you, also. Or the dealership(s).

Typically how many quarts does it take to fill it up?
