Has anyone else had this problem? I noticed it only happens sometimes, then other times it shifts smooth at redline.
Normal driving though its smooth as butter, just on WOT... ?

yep i get that with my short shifter cause i yank back too hard. you're probably doing the same thing. i just took out my short shifter....greased up everything i could and put it back in. seems to be better right now at those darn 1-2 redline shifts. we'll see how it holds
2nd gear is probably my worst. The car jerks easily.
I'm trying to figure out why the tranny gets a little "reluctant" to shift when I try to shift fast.
Try this, accelerate to a normal speed (30-40mph). Hold clutch down and try to pull shifter from 3rd to 4th fast. Then do the same, but shift slower.
This is annoying and my wrist hurts because of it.

In my experience this problem is not unique to the Z, or Nissans in general. I've experience reluctance in the 1st to 2nd shift at high engine speeds and high loads in my Z, Mustang Cobra (Tremec), BMW 5 series, and my 996. (No I don't still own all of these cars). I've been told by a couple of dealership mechanics that the only way to eliminate this characterisic is to have the transmission taken down and massaged by a custom shop
i have had this happen too. once at the drag strip (nice and embarassing).
definately a synchro issue. you just need to hesitate on the way to 2nd. make the shift kind of a clink, clink rather than just one fast move through. hell, you should do this with every shift. you synchros and your wallet will love you more for it, and you don't loose much momentum.

Yeah, I had the same exact problem. Transmission was replaced at 7500 miles. The problem is back though. I still get a grind, but rarely nowadays. I am at 15000 miles now. Im scared that with my luck I won't be able to replicate the problem at the dealership.
My transmission also has this problem shifting to second only when shifting fast at redline and it only does it occasionally. It the shifter will go into the second gear position but not engage the gear it does not grind as I normaly think of it but it does make a noise that you cant really distinguish at WOT redline. At that point your only option is to shift back to neutral and try again-where it has always went into gear. I am thinking of putting different fluid in it and getting a tilton clutch and flywheel to help the problem. If I shift slow at redline no problem. I dont know if it is a function of time or not leting the rpm drop--I am hoping the second so a lighter flywheel may be a solution. What do you guys think?
