Yes, it's a way of driving sideways on purpose. Not to make it a quick run at all, rather a spectacular driving.
In Japan this technique is quite popular. Some tips are to use used tires that are less wide than suitable for the rims: you do not want a good grip! The tires are worn away very fast! I've tried it many years ago on a racing track: It's very fun! But takes some skill and dare!
If you do not want to risk your car, a model car can be almost as fun:

yeah Robert, I've always wanted a small model car for doing it in the summer - winter's another story, just as much fun can be held sustaining a turn @ opposite lock at 25mph in snow

tires were Nokian Hakka RSi 225x50(55r)x17

Actually that was some 20+ years ago! But if you want to do this today with your car in summer, low traction is desired. Used tires with a narrow width will do nicely.
In the winter, as we have here in Sweden today, any tire will do as long as it is slippery!
But you will have to disengage the computerized traction control. And practice on open spaces, preferably in race tracks.
On model cars? I can't say! I'm a xufo flyer when it comes to models!

Yeah, the lack of snow this year has been dissapointing (I'm an avid skier). Oh well, it's kept the use of salt down and thus the frequency the Z has needed washes

I don't think I'd call sliding around in the snow drifting, but the pics look real nice.

for those of u who want to know how to drift with RC cars, u either get drifting tires from yokoma
which have rings around the tires so the real tires barely touch the ground, if u wanna spend a lots of money, u can drive it on the rims, or what most people do is put PVC pipe around the rims
