Default BMW 5 Series

My friends' BMW. Still working on the photo skills. Site sucked, would have loved to be in a warehouse or something. Right now, it's just a matter of getting the right lens (would love a 10-12mm, and a 125+mm), right location, right tools (ladder), right lighting (need fill-in flash)... f.

Lookin good. +1 on more pics of the Z.

The background isn't that bad as it isn't busy enough to take away from the car and has some good contrasting colors. One thing I noticed is that it appears that the image was sharpened which gave you some hard lined (bad) bokeh in the background.

The 5 is a pretty boring looking car. Keep it up on the photo skills, I'm with you there.

Serious? I've posted tons of pics the last few months. Here's some old and new pics. The BMW's gonna sport some sick parts in the coming moths- Hamann stuff. It's gonna be sick. Just took picks in the "mostly" stock stage. That deck spoiler, and rear window spoiler (check closely) is AC Schnitzer (sp?). I'll post more pics as it progresses. I was supposed to make it a duo photoshoot... odd couple Bimmer and Z, but the park was too loaded to get a good area to take shots.

1. My fave "photo" yet.

2. A night shot, low light= tripod

3. Yet another night shot... this was taken with very low light. Tripod a must.

4. Accidentally took this great shot with great color. Time of day really matters. I feel so rushed sometimes.

5. Passing by the now defunct Waialua Sugar Mill during work, and wondered what a great place to take photos.

6.

7.

8. Loved the rust. Taken at the Waialua Farmers Market.

9. Overcast day at the Haleiwa piers.

10.

Some misc shots of Haleiwa (North Shore).

What kind of camera do you have? You should invest in a circu. polar

Black cars are always tough to take pictures of thats why you don't see them on the cover of magazines often

The pics of your Z look 10000x better than the ones of the Bimmer .. That Sugar Mill location is pimp!!!.. I'd go back and take some nice long setup shots.. no quickies driving by at work.. haha

The Bimmer pics looks oversaturated

Canon XTi. I really want to start that "how to take auto photos... from the perspective of a beginner" thread, but until I finish some projects... it's gonna be awhile. What I should invest in is that Canon 28-135mm IS lens and a proper wide-angle. Tamron (is it 10-20??) or Tokina 12-24. Oooh, those and a proper flash... and a proper bag... and a proper cleaning kit... and maybe a monopod. If modding the car is not costly enough, taking pictures of it will surely put me in the poorhouse.

I found that shooting black cars are tough that day. Metering was all over the place. It was like, do I aim it at the dark part of the body, or the highlights?? Next time, I'll use Auto bracketing. Learnt alot that day, even though location was not the best.

BTW, I always keep a circular polarizer on the lens instead of a UV filter. Even for night shots as it helps with reflections on glass if you don't want them.

Mike, yeah, spent 2 hours at that Sugar Mill, and beleive me, I wasn't in the prime spot. I found out I need to be there earlier in the day before cars block off "the spot." The place is rusting like mad. A dark car would be optimal against the light color of the mill. The Farmers Market had textures and colors I couldn't beleive. I'll ake some artsy fartsy shots of that building/store. Been reading and buying books on the ins and outs of the art of photo taking. Again, this photography thing is addicting, and have opened my eyes to the beauty of such mundane things. I'm always rubbernecking now, looking for prime spots to take a photoshoot.

Until I get that 28-135 IS lens from Canon, I can't really do long focal length shots. I wanna flatten out that bumper from 3/4 views. I was comparing and looking at some shots you took at 150mm at 3/4 view to some I took on my P&S at about the same view, and man, that bumper just flattened out compared to my pics. Again, your pics are motivation for me to pluck it down for a proper telephoto lens. I think 135 is enough reach for me. Hope i don't go hardcore enough to shoot birds, that'll really break the bank.

The shots with the Bimmer were taken with RAW enabled. I was fiddling around with the Canon program. I tend to like the artificial oversaturation in the pics. In hindsight, look like I overdid it Found out that working with RAW preserves alot of settings, and that even some severly under/over exposed shots are salvageble. I'm shooting in RAW from now on, as JPG artifacts isn't really a big deal, but RAW just allows for more post processing options all the while being "lossless."

Good luck and all the best man..

after I scrolled up, the z photos are composed pretty well. was that the look you were going for in terms of white balance? if not, you should try playing with the custom white balance feature.

read the manual on that part and go back out during the night and try the shot again
