what are your camera settings for the long night shots?
i bought a Nikon D80 a couple of months ago and i am still "toying" with it. i was taking a picture of my car up on this hill and behind the car, the sun was setting behind some mountains. the sun was completly behind the mountain, but there was still a bright orange glow. i was having trouble capturing that sunset and still being able to see my car.
well here are the two shots i came up with:

the two shots are only seconds apart, but with different settings to capture either the sunset or my car.
so if you have any advice on how to capture both in one shot, that would be great.
thanks

I would suggest getting the best possible polarizer, as external filters on the lens can produce ghosting (reflections on the filter) as seen here in this shot:

See the stuff in the sky? They are reflections of the street lamps.
Secondly, and sadly, it's impossible to get that shot with one shot. It's a common photography dillema. Do you shoot for the sky, or do you shoot for the earth bound objects... shoot for the stuff on the ground, and you get a washed out sky with no details of the clouds. Shoot for the sky, and you have underexposed, dark objects, like your car.
The only solution is to take 2 pictures and do some photoshop work. Buy a tripod. Unless you're a pro, and want to save some money, just buy a cheap one at WalMart or KMart. I myself got a Bogen Manfrotto. Take one picture that correctly exposes for the sky, then one picture that correctly exposes for the objects, making sure not to move the camera during both shots. Cut the sky out with the masking tool, then paste the sky on the other pic.
You know what? I lied. There's a 2nd solution... it involves HDR...
This sky exposure problem, which was actually discussed recently here between me and Anthony C. Check post #26 in this thread on HDR. In fact, try to go through the 2 pages, and try HDR yourself.

Here's a quick HDR of your dark picture. Unfortunately, the HDR process emphasized the pixelation from your heavily compressed JPG file (the picture). I actually discussed this also in post #9 of this exact same thread when I discussed RAW vs. JPG. You got a small, fast loading picture, but as you can see the tradeoffs.

Do you have the original, large picture?
Good luck.

Yeah it's dark, shoulda used flash or some external light. Still learning to THINK and not be all excited during photography.

I also forgot to turn of the Image Stabilization and lost some pics (IS should be turned off on a tripod for the older IS lenses).
L Glass? Heh, I wish. Again, using the old... and I mean old EF-28-135mm IS "non L."
