You might want to look into Apple's Aperture or Adobe's Lightroom. They add extra processing options for RAWs, and manages pictures.
Why is photo management so important? Because when you take pictures, you want to bracket your shots with settings and different angles. I probably only use 10% of the shots I take and keep the rest for reference or in case the shot grows on me.
RAW Vs. JPG
What also should be mentioned is that the JPG format is a compression process to manage picture size (make the memory size smaller), so it is a "lossy" format. In fact, if you dabbled with image editors and exported to JPG, that there is usually a slider allowing you to choose the amount of compression. Obviously, the higher percentage produces a picture containing lots of pixelation. The TIFF format should be used if the camera allows, as that is a "lossless" format.
Of course, this all goes out the window if you don't adjust / touch up your photos. If this is you, just shoot in JPG and forget about the above.

Those long exposure shots on the bridge are beautiful! Good work. I bought a D40 a while back just so I could take some pics of the Z, but never use it. Those pictures are ALMOST motivating enough to make me wipe the dust off it, but its naptime...
