Just set your camera to Time Value (TV mode on Canon) mode so the camera can select the correct aperture value for your chosen exposure time. Choosing the length of time really depends on how long you want the light streaks. At 30 seconds, the streaks are super long, but take note, the noise is escalated the longer the exposure. I shot AsianRicerChick's car with exposure times ranging from 15-25 seconds, as there were some cars passing by, and I didn't want their light trails on the pic. Usually though, the longer the better. Best advice I can give is that you buy a tripod and test this out yourself on a bridge or where there's heavy traffic.

cttwentytwo - you have any hi res pics of your car especially this one? I want it for my wallpaper if you don't mind.
RIGHT CLICK HERE AND CHOOSE "SAVE TO DESKTOP"... or click here, and wait for a large picture to load on your browser.

These long exposure shots are so easy to do. Finding the right place is the hardest thing to do.

ISO 200... just another setting I forgot to change. But I wonder just how less noisy ISO 100 would have been for long exposure shots. The extra sensitivity of ISO 200 certainly could have helped with the overall exposure of the shots.

I also forgot to turn of the Image Stabilization and lost some pics (IS should be turned off on a tripod for the older IS lenses).

L Glass? Heh, I wish. Again, using the old... and I mean old EF-28-135mm IS "non L."
yep.. for IS issue.. so far as i know of.. 70-200mm F4 IS is only one that u dont have to turn IS off when you use tripod.

here is some samples of ISO 100 with XT tho.. urs should be just little bit better.

here is what i would do i would measure brightest part and darkest part's shutter speed, then you decide which part you want to express. then calclate the shutter speed, and boom! shoot!

I think it's true that you don't have to turn off the 70-300mm IS also.

BTW, Noise in ISO 100 to ISO 200 is negligible.

I did this on HDR some time back. HDR, used correctly, can fix some of the exposure issues in most of your pics.

is the kit lens capable of similar long exposure shots like those above? reason i ask is because i decided my car is more important and i'd rather mod it before i grab a new lens.

but the 50mm 1.8 is in my near future - nice and cheap.
