The shot in that pic was taken w/ a RIG and the shot isn't the hard part...it's the editing after that is a pain!

clifrlp good find on that site, im trying to save for a wide angle lens/telephoto zoom combo if i can find it...i have taken some good photos right now without touching any settings, but am not messing with settings and learning the controls, but i def. wanna take pictures like that! and a rig is? not a tripod im guessing....man, the world of photography is awesome but so expensive lol but we got some pretty good amature level cameras i think

I just got this lens...it's a great all around lens. When zoomed in all the way it gives the affect of a fish eye...it's clearance right now at Best Buy and you may be able to get it for a discount or the display. I'd go check it out if you're wanting to get a good lens for all around use...

yea i like that lens, but i was looking at the 70-300mm nikkor lens, the non VR version of it is only like 200 dollars, but the VR version is 700 dollars, so im debating whether or not to save for the VR version or just go for the non VR...

Get IS or VR versions whenever you can. Lets you up your shutter speed by a couple of steps, especially when you are going to hand hold the camera or put it on something moving. A 70-300 lens is fine but you get what you pay for. Especially in the fstop. You want to get some nice depth of field stuff you won't do good work with a cheap lens.
If you are running a 2/3 cmos, then your 70-300 is more like 100-450, I don't know the Nikon cameras so I can't tell you if it is.
You will want a wider angle to do shots like you have seen, and 10-22 lenses aren't cheap.

Yea Rig shots are amazing...I will be attemting to build a rig once I get some more stuff for the z lol.
Photoshop CS3 or CS4 (newer more expensive version...) and Adobe Lightroom is great if you're planning on any night shots. Great for editing lighting and sharpness etc.
VR is always the way to go, it really helps w/ any hand shaking and hand panning.

yea, im pretty sure there are no cheap lenses that are good, i will prob get a wide angle before i get a telephoto zoom,
quick question, you know how when you view your pics on your camera after taking them and you can zoom in on them with the zoom buttons on the left, is there a way to save it that way? or you just have to crop it on your comp?

I wouldn't recommend photoshop cs3 or cs4 for a novice. Serious overkill, and lightroom is for doing raw and quick edits but not really built for removing things from pictures or running layers.
I would recomment Photoshop elements v7 as it is pretty inexpensive and has pretty much everything with the exception of the macro ability and cmyk, which you only need if you are sending things to a professional printer.
I own cs3 and find that I can uninstall it since it takes so much longer to use than elements.

Yea lightroom is for raw and quick edits dealing w/ the light on the picture. Not for any sort of actual photoshopping where you remove things from the picture etc.
CS3 works well for me, i'm a total novice but I feel I can grow into it...I haven't used elements v7 so I don't know.
And yea, do any sort of crops on the PC. Much more accurate
