Default advice on brakes

yeah I am having the same problem as everyone else I am sure, but I would like to know what other people have done/what products they bought. You know how you clean your rims and then drive around for ten minutes and theres brake dust all over them again. Plus mine are squeeky as hell... but anyway who has bought aftermarket brakes that do not make my front rims look like they are gunmetal, how much did they cost, and where did you get them? Brakes is one area I'm not so good in... either post on here or pm me.

1. Try WheelWax www.wheelwax.com
2. FYI, the correct spelling is BRAKE not break.

swap out your pads for Hawk HPS pads, they dust quite a bit less than stock pads... while you're in there you might as well swap out the stock brake lines for braided SS lines, and swap the fluid for motul 600 or ATE superblue or some other high end fluid... it'll be like you've got completely new brakes...

FWIW

not quite... this is the poor-man's way to upgrade brakes... rotors and calipers are quite a bit more expensive (hence all the $3.5k + BBK's)... pads, fluid, and lines only runs about $300.

is that $300 just for the stuff or is that installation too? I could get a buddy to do it but honestly I have never worked on brakes before in my life.

that's just for parts... i'd estimate about 2 hours of labor to do all four wheels, so if you're going to take it to a shop, add on your applicable labor rate

does getting SS lines and new fluid really help that much? (just curious)

and how does that rate against getting new rotors instead?

and +1 on the Hawks. had them before and experienced little dust

well, since i've got the brembos already, doing the lines, fluid, and pads is just about the only things i can upgrade short of going to a BBK.

all of these will help to make your braking sharper and more forceful on the stock brakes, you'll just experience fade faster (because you'll be pushing the brakes harder, more often). The only real thing a rotor upgrade does for you is that it allows you to dissipate more heat, thus reduce / eliminate brake fade.

i'm thinking about getting a set of slotted / directionally-vaned rotors, can probably snag a set of four for a decent price, then i really would be at the limit of the stock brembo calipers

stainless lines really help as you push your brakes harder and harder... when the fluid heats up the stock hoses expand causing the pedal to feel mushy. Stainless lines eliminate the expansion and higher temp fluid won't boil during repeated hard braking. Hawk HPS pads will dust less but still bite well. Cross drilled rotors don't really help imo. Slotted rotors do have a slight advantage of de-glazing the pads and offering slightly better wet braking performance.

Not to mention that cross drilled rotors have less structural rigidity and can disintegrate under high stress (i.e. if you track your car as hard / often as John).

Has anyone else tried the directionally vaned rotors? I can't remember the brand name for the life of me, i'll make a couple calls and see if I can dig it up. From what I was told about the rotors is that it can reduce brake temperature by 80 degrees F over flat-vaned rotors!

where can I get some hawk brake pads, ss line and fluid? I'm gonna go ahead and replace them cause I'm tired of all that damn dust... and I'm trusting you all that that will take care of it! if i need to replace the rotors/calipers or whatever, let me know now so I can do it all at once! all i really want is to visably reduce the dust that gets on the rims...

My local Z shop had the pads and fluid, but I picked up the SS lines @ www.performancenissanparts.com (i think they also have the pads) -- you should be able to pick up the fluid just about anywhere (i went with ATE SuperBlue)

I have some almost new hawk hps pads I'd part with for cheap... also, I got my lines from Z-1 automotive. OG racing in Chantilly carries fluid - go w/ motul 600 or ate superblue

$50 for the pads (front and rear) - I bought my motul from Induktion motorsports for 14.95 a bottle. I think that is pretty much the going rate. Not sure what OG racing charges but I think it is around the same.
