Default Passing emissions in VA with FI?

I'm in the market for an FI system and would like to know if I'll have problems passing emissions. I've heard that as long as I have the cats I won't have trouble passing. However, I'd like to know from some of you in the area who have experience with this. Thanks!

If your tune is good and you give the car to the emissions guy with the cats good and hot, you shouldn't have a problem. I'm running catless and richer than Bill Gates, so I'll be shopping around for emissions under the table when my time comes.

Yup I have Vortech and just had the car inspected. I have High Flow cats and all they did was a visual inspection...no sniffer.

kcobean- why do the cats have to be hot?

Mcopare- they dont put the car on a machine? usually when i used to get my emissions done....like 2 years ago... they put this thing into your exhaust to measure something. this is in fairfax county va.

I don't think I've ever had emissions testing.

The cats have to be hot.. because they are .. well.. catalyists.. the heat causes them to change the bad and unburnt things in your exaust into not so bad .. burn things.. lol

Also .. I dont think that people outside of the NOVA area have to do emissions.

here is a good link on how cats work

Nope. Every two years my Z and beater go to VEIP for emissions testing. I personally think it's a scam to suck more cash out of us, but what the hell do I know?

As long as you don't have a check engine light, you should be fine. The sniffer test is a thing of the past. Visual inspection is another story.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. They check for more than just CEL's when they hook up to your car. They also look to see that all of the sensors report ready, including catalyst (which I *think* they do by looking for a change in emissions content between the front and rear O2 sensors). In a car with no cats, the emissions will be the same front/rear and your catalytic converter status will permanently be "not ready" which is an automatic failure. Your best bet is to pull your Y pipe if your configuration has it, put your cats back in, test, and then revert back. If you have something like the Turbonetics kit....good luck!

That's the problem with the new emissions testing systems. The computer that's interfacing with your vehicle's OBD-II system doesn't lie and it's tied directly into the state system so as soon as you fail, it's recorded. The only way I *think* you can 'cheat' is to use someone else's car. The reason I didn't do this when I had my T-netics kit was because I could never get confirmation on whether the VIN is available via the OBD interface. If it is, you can't do it. I don't think it is though, which means that would work if you can find someone with a stock car to help you out. I may know a place if you decide to go this route.

I passed emissions last year with no cats. All they did was the OBD-II check (I don't have any CELs). I'm good till 2010.

I knew if someone was going to come along and prove me wrong, it would be you, ya dirty rotten son of a *****.

So I guess I should say that based on MY EXPERIENCE, these are the difficulties with passing emissions with no cats.

Do you have O2 stand-offs on your car?

How you been brother?

Here's what you do:

1. clear codes
2. drive 50 miles
3. get emissions test
4. pass

At 75 miles or so, the check engine light will come back on, so do it before then and u're golden for the next 2 yrs.

In MD all you have to be is dropped low enough so you cant get up over the rollers to the obd11 reader.I got a 2 tear waiver and they didnt even look at my car.
