Default got a question for you guys

hey all,ive been in the auto repair business all my working life and have kinda like a poll.i have always had to work sat, nights and sometime sundays and holidays since it is a retail auto business, but that becomes a pain in the *** if you know what i mean.it is still 5 days a week unless someone is on vacation.

i have a oppurtunity to go and work for a privately owned shop thats not opened weekends, nights or holidays.but the problem is,a longer drive (45 minutes versus 20 minutes) and less pay (not a ton less but about 3 grand less).the benifit i see is less hassle dealing with the corporate people, less hours,no inventory to do at night 3 times a year.but could you deal with the less pay for more peace of mind or not.let me know!!!!!

gotta make a decision soon.

Definately. 3 grand over a year isn't too much for peace of mind. You can be miserable and make more or happier and make a little less. I'd do it.

Keith is the drive in traffic?? I drive 30 minutes to work when the traffic is moving, when its not (most days) it may take 45-1 hour tops to get home. While it may not sound like much, I HATE getting stuck in traffic when I just had a long day and want to get home. If you can deal with that by all means do it...

heck yeah i'd take it. the fewer hours that you work account for well over 3 grand, so actually you'll be making more money in a sense.

peace, tranquility, and the enjoyment of life > stress and a few bucks.

I'd take it simply for not having to work weekends and holidays... that sh*t sucks.

The question you need to ask yourself is, "How much is my happiness worth to me?"

Great points made here. I would choose a job paying 10k less if I worked less hours and enjoyed what I did more than my current job. You can use those remaining hours and invest them into more money making strategies.

Its all about the traffic to me... I HATE HATE HATE my commute when I have to go to the office, 65 miles takes me 2+ hours if I try to travel around here any time between 4PM and 6PM. That is my issue. Besides if it is against the flow of traffic is the 3K really gunna kill your rich ***???

Keith , I think you should choose the one that will ultimately make you happier. Don't burn any bridges, but take the new job if you feel like the fact hat you don't have to work nights and weekends anymore.

I don't do weekends. Its nice too but I don't know that I'd be willing to jump at another job if it ment more than doubling my commute.

I'd go for the "no weekend" job in a heart beat. I have to work weekends maybe one month out of the year (dead lines) and when I do it royally blows. I thought mondays were bad enough but when you have to work sat/sun ... eff that. I guess the deciding factor for me is how are the people at the private shop ... if you think you'll get along with them that's even more incentive ... Did I mention, um the NFL is played on sundays?

The longer commute willl cost you an extra 208 hours/year (25 minutes each way = 50 minutes per day * 5 days/week * 50 weeks/year) that you are uncompensated for. That's an additional 5 forty hour work weeks and one work day you'll spend on the road.

That extra 50 minutes per day at 40 MPH average (guessing) = 33 miles per day, which at 24 MPG is 1.3 gallons extra a day. If you make the drive 5 days/week, 50 weeks a year, that's 325 gallons a year, which at 2.25/gallon is another $730/year, which you are uncompensated for. The added wear and tear on your car has an uncalculated cost as well.

All the math aside, I'm with the other guys. Unless the financial consideration makes it totally unrealistic, choose lifestyle over dollars. If your nights and weekends are worth more to you than the decrease in pay and increased commuting costs, make the move.

You should also consider the total benefits package. Compare health benefits, 401K options, etc. if those are offered.

In the end, only you can decide what's most important. Good luck!

Bro...take the new job opportunity. I work retail too...i know how it is. i work weekends ALL THE TIME. Not only do i work retail but i'm a manager which means even MORE WORK. A better quality of living is worth it. Evenings and weekends off....less of a workload VS $3000 less and a longer drive....i'm sorry...hands down- the new job sounds worth it in the long run. It can be hard to take the initial step because you feel comfortable where you are now and it'll be a new working enviroment where you may have to prove yourself all over again...but hey... DO IT! you'll be happy with it...i assure you.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Better benefits can help offset the $3k deficit.

No chance they'll match your current salary since you'll be driving a lot further? That's what I'd try for!
