Default Anyone here ever got caught with a radar detector?

A friend of mine (also in VA) has a radar detector in his car and he's never been caught by a cop with it. So I'm curious, has anyone here been rung up for their radar detector? If so, how were you all caught, by visual inspection or did the cop's radar detect it? What was the fine? Was it confiscated? Thanks for replies.

I did driving through VA. The cop was trapping on the left side of the road. I was in the left lane doing about 60 becuase the detector went off. He saw the detector in the windshield and pulled out after me. He gave me a ticket for using a radar detector device. It was about $100 fine. He did not take it away but asked to see it so he could take down the serial # and posted the sn# on the ticket. I live in MD so it may be different for some one living in VA.

I did in Va Beach... I didn't have it on but the cop saw it. I was too busy turning off the movie I had playing on the in-dash and forgot about it. He took and said if I wanted to get it back, I had to go to court and explain to the judge why I needed it. I just paid the fine. I think it was like $40. That was about 3 or 4 years ago though so it really wouldn't surprise me if it was up to $100 nowadays.

Clever cop, never heard that one before. You could be more clever and say, "can I have that in writing saying that you would return it if I explained my reasoning at court?" He didn't specify if it had to be a good or bad reason, as long as you gave one

However, I've had mine for 4 years and counting. Even got pulled over with it hanging there and the cop never saw it. Use the design of the Z to your advantage, we have a "hidden" roof where it grooves upward. Be smart and clip your radar detector to your visor. People that pull up next to me/stand infront of the car/behind the car can't see the detector since the roof design of the Z lets u "hide" it up there. Whereas other cars, the detector is highly visible clipped onto the visor or any location for that matter. The WORST place you can hang your radar is suction cupped to the front windshield, especially in VA. You're simply asking to get pulled over.

alot of detectors you can sneak up right above the rear view mirror. No one will ever notice it there. You can just hard wire it to the wires that run to your overhead lights....very stealthy

I got caught once with one in VA too. I made an illegal u-turn. I didn't know, I was lost. But he saw it after he pulled me over, it wasn't even plugged in. I got a fine and he wrote down the serial number then gave it back to me.

I got pulled over in Canada with one. Apparently they're illegal in that country. Motorcycle cop saw it as he passed me. He took it and gave me a $150 ticket that I never paid. That was over 5 years ago, they still send me a notice once in awhile. The way I see it, it was a $150 radar detector. That should make us even.

VA Radar laws recently changed.....

46.2-1079 Radar detectors; demerit points not to be awarded

A. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle on the highways of the Commonwealth when such vehicle is equipped with any device or mechanism, passive or active, to detect or purposefully interfere with or diminish the measurement capabilities of any radar, laser, or other device or mechanism employed by law-enforcement personnel to measure the speed of motor vehicles on the highways of the Commonwealth for law-enforcement purposes. It shall be unlawful to use any such device or mechanism on any such motor vehicle on the highways. It shall be unlawful to sell any such device or mechanism in the Commonwealth. However, provisions of this section shall not apply to any receiver of radio waves utilized for lawful purposes to receive any signal from a frequency lawfully licensed by any state or federal agency.

This section shall not be construed to authorize the forfeiture to the Commonwealth of any such device or mechanism. Any such device or mechanism may be taken by the arresting officer if needed as evidence, and, when no longer needed, shall be returned to the person charged with a violation of this section, or at that person's request, and his expense, mailed to an address specified by him. Any unclaimed devices may be destroyed on court order after six months have elapsed from the final date for filing an appeal.

Except as provided in subsection B of this section, the presence of any such prohibited device or mechanism in or on a motor vehicle on the highways of the Commonwealth shall constitute prima facie evidence of the violation of this section. The Commonwealth need not prove that the device or mechanism in question was in an operative condition or being operated.

B. A person shall not be guilty of a violation of this section when the device or mechanism in question, at the time of the alleged offense, had no power source and was not readily accessible for use by the driver or any passenger in the vehicle.

C. This section shall not apply to motor vehicles owned by the Commonwealth or any political subdivision thereof and used by law-enforcement officers in their official duties, nor to the sale of any such device or mechanism to law-enforcement agencies for use in their official duties.

D. No demerit points shall be awarded by the Commissioner for violations of this section. Any demerit points awarded by the Commissioner prior to July 1, 1992, for any violation of this section shall be rescinded and the driving record of any person awarded demerit points for a violation of this section shall be amended to reflect such rescission.

(1962, c. 125, 46.1-198.1; 1975, c. 108; 1976, c. 90; 1978, cc. 87, 91; 1981, c. 303; 1989, c. 727; 1992, c. 825; 1998, c. 300.)
I run radar in my car, mostly at night. I was pulled over one time during the day for it.. I was in Dead stopped traffic, and forgot to take it down. Cop pulled me over and noted the serial #. Since it was not plugged in, and he could see that it was not.. he gave me a warning.

^^ Thanks for that, man! I just printed that sucker out and will keep it in my car. So if you are pulled over in VA and disconnect the power source, you are cool?

In N.C. I was driving my dads C6 vette (with a K-40 calibre, the LED's are flush mounted in the guage cluster and very hard to see if not lit up) and a local cop pulled us over after we drove by his speed trap. As soon as we saw him pull out I turned the **** under the dash and turned the system off since I wasn't sure of the laws in N.C. We weren't really speeding, but my laser jammer lit up which gave me an opportunity to decelerate somewhat. He swore we had a radar/laser defense system and made us get out of the car. He then asked to look inside and we said fine. After about 10 mins of searching the car inside and out we could tell he was starting to get really pissed off and all we were saying is " I don't know officer". It was all I could do to keep from laughing. After about 10 mins my dad was also starting to get pissed as well, and all he was whispering to me was " I told you not to put that damn thing in my car." Finally, the cop gave up and reluctantly let us go. I laughed to myself all day just picturing how pissed the cop was getting. And I said to my dad all week " I told you it works."

i used to live in KY and got pulled over when i had a passport x50 or something like that. it was at night and it pretty much saved me from a ticket. a pontiac flew buy me on a two lane road, and i was about to give chase just for fun(drove a 95 non turbo talon at the time, lol) when it went off so i slowed down. a state trooper came flying up behind me and pulled me over. he shined his flash light right on the detector and asked me where i was goin and what i was doin. turns out he was after the pontiac that i was about to chase, hence the reason the guy flew past me i guess, but he never said a word about the detector. My mom however got pulled over using one, in KY, and the guy told her it was illegal and made her promise not to use it anymore,.....and she never has again, lol!

Honestly, Im not quite sure man, I haven't done too much research. I really only got one after a buddy of mine (who was a dealer) talked me into putting one in my Z. Since then, I am firm believer in them. And they come in handy for alot of Red light cameras (some shoot laser I've found) and it jams them as well.
